Design Software

Hi All,

Does anyone know of any acoustic design software to aid in speaker placement in theatres etc. I found several bits like the ease software from qsc but that only focuses on there own product. I was looking for something more flexible. The cheaper the better. Any free downloads would obviously be fantastic.

Thanks for all help,

Matt.

Ease is the most widely used acoustic modeling software. It is distributed by Renkus-Heinz, and Ease data files are available from many speaker manufacturers for their speakers. It is not inexpensive, nor easy to use. Many manufacturers, particularly of line arrays, offer their own software for array modeling. that is often the easiest and cheapest way to go.

Ulysses (http://www.ifbcon.de/software/ulysses/e.php) does the same thing as EASE, with a similar range of brands supported, but provides a free demo edition, which is only limited by the fact that you can't save or print. I find it very useful, and often just bash the models together in 1 session, before screenshotting them and saving them as JPEGs for future reference.

Matt,

Just to reinforce Mackerr's point, EASE is the closest to an industry standard there is, and most loudspeaker manufacturers provide measurement data for it. Probably only Meyer and Bose don't, although I believe it's possible to get the data indirectly. Meyer have their own free online modelling tool, but it is relatively basic, restricted to their products but does have good resolution. Bose have their Modeller programme, again, specfic to their products. I beleive that there is an online version of EASE that can be used for free.

Some manufacturers are still relying on older relatively low resolution measurements for EASE, whereas data written for version 4 has higher resolution and phase information too.

What will become apparent, is that modelling software is a design tool that takes a lot of getting into - both from the programme learning curve aspect and the electroacoustic knowledge needed to interpret results.
