recording studios in B'ham

hello,

I have been asked to find out where my brothers band should take their custom to record an album. However he lives in Birmingham and I am in Leeds so I don't know anything about studios local to him.

The band are based in Birmingham, but often work in Shropshire. They are a young band and want a demo CD to promote themselves outside of the West Midlands/Shropshire area. Transport isn't a problem, they will travel if needs be.

Although good musicians, none of them know much about the recording side and in the past they have been ripped off with poor quaility/ badly mixed recordings. Which is what brings me here. Can someone point me in the direction of a studio thats reasonably priced (they're all students! But they have got a grant to help out.) with an engineer who is going to offer a good quality CD at the end?

I'm just making initial equiries for future, possibly this summer. Any recommendations/ volunteering of services gratefully recieved.

Re. Shropshire .... I know of a studio in Oswestry ... the Forge Studio. Not sure whether they're any good, but they could be worth checking out. They're owned/run by a chap called Phil Beaumont, who's a nice chap (I provided some lights for a rather enjoyable outdoor gig he did last summer ...).

Rich and Ice house are the two main studios in birmingham, if they are really skint ask them to give Sandwell college a ring, they run a HND and degree in sound engineering and there gear is top notch, a few years ago they where one of the first people to have protools, they do lots of recording and are screaming out for good bands to record. There is a new studio opening in stafford as well, but I cant remember the name at the minute, will get back to you on that one.

Depending on what there ages are they could try a local collage, unless they have to be part of one. My mates are using the studio at their collage and doing a cd.

Id give a second recommendation, for the Ice House the band I do PA for recorded a demo there sometime ago and it was pretty good and pretty well produced, I also have heard recordings done at sandwell college and there not to bad just depends the quality of the person you end up with producing and mixing.
