define "eye candy"

Something that has no real purpose other than to look good.

Do you mean that the lights themselves look spectacular rather than the effect that they create? Its used in descussions about LEDs so I guess that:- pointed at the audience make it "eyecandy" but pointed at the band makes it a colour wash (for example)?

Yes... That would be how I see it, like in this picture, the LED and colour changing abilities make it look better, there is no need for it to be LED or change colour, but because it does it makes it look better or "eye candy"

Indeed, for me LED's as eye candy means primarily there as visible sources, any backlight effects they having being secondary (often with "real" back light coming from high up out of site anyway). Could probably say the same about disco fixture behind pub bands.

I would say that things like beams in haze, whilst definitely "an effect" rather than lighting where a slightly different thing.

No. It's the effects that look good, but they are not lighting the people or enhancing the mood - merely doing pretty things. The same effects could run along with pretty much any show rather than having been created specifically to be perfect in context. The "eye" looks at them and says "nice effect" even if it was an empty stage with nothing happening on it.
