djsteviec
Hi. I have a set of Peavey 2XT 15" speakers which I use to use for mobile. My friend is using them now but has blown one of the main drivers. 1.Where is the cheapest place to get a replacement?2.Is using a Peavey replacment best? Thanks,Steve. cliveybaby
I would try to replace the driver if I remember they are 'Black Widow' drivers, make sure you check if they are the 8 or 4 ohmcab as the speaker will reflect this you could have the driver reconed as for dealers im not sure if you are stuck you can pop in another driverI would suggest Eminence Kappa-pro 15" as this should sound fineand has a bit more power handling Cliveybaby
Jivemaster
Speak to Peavey in Corby! give them all the model and serial numbers and they may well offer you a repacement basket - they are very easy to fit! And they should match the sound of the other cab! and they come by carrier. 01536461234 I think
Sirch Sound
I would suggest Eminence Kappa-pro 15" as this should sound fineand has a bit more power handling CliveybabyBut then you have one speaker sounding different to the other, with different spacs. Replace the driver with the right driver (If your not reconing) or replace both with a different type of driver. You should always have a pair of the same drivers. johndenim
You will need either a 1508 or 1504 for replacement. Depending on required impedence.(It is not the whole speaker if you are unaware of this)Its just the replacement basket, which (with care) can be changed by yourself, just undo the 3 bolts and remove the old basket, clean out any debris such as dirt and dust with either a can of air or fold over some gaffa tape and slide it through the circular slot. On a level surface with the new basket facing down, gentle lower the 'magnet part' (sorry, the official word eludes me!)over the voice coil, matching up the holes for the bolts. Put in the bolts but only hand tight, you may need to adjust it to get it seated right.A good test is to gently push in the cone, you should hear no scraping noise.Tighten up the bolts and thats it!Here is some info, have a look around, I bought one for £90 from a co in derby, can't remember where though, sorry. http://www.peavey.com/support/technotes/misc/blackwidow.cfm John Denim. cliveybaby
I agree but could of sworn he was on about a good old PV hisys 2 for discos Kappa would be fine But it is better to have original specs/matched pairs CB
MarkPAman
On a level surface with the new basket facing down, gentle lower the 'magnet part' (sorry, the official word eludes me!)over the voice coil, matching up the holes for the bolts. I know that's how Peavey say it should be done, but I've always found it easier to put the (heavy) magnet on the bench, and lower the (lighter) basket onto the top if it. johndenim
That seem's the easy way Mark but through trial and error I have found your way to actually be harder to align the voice coil in place. When the magnet is lowered yes its heavier, but you can see through the bolt holes and it goes in easier. The voice coil is so fragile, possible scraping of it could result in it being out of shape, or even worse. MarkPAman
Fair enough John. I must have done hundreds over the years I worked running Peavey rigs and never managed to damage one that way. I've never thought the coil was that fragile, you'd have to do more than just touch it to damage it. Neither way is wrong.
KevinE
A Peavey basket kit is both cheaper and better than either a recone or a replacment driver. Peavey basket kits come with full Peavey instructions on the Correct Way to Do It.
johndenim
Ok Mark, let's just say that if you get the two parts together you have done well! I had to change a 12" basket on one of my friends cabs, it worked for 5 secs then became intermittant.I had not damaged the coil in any way, I took it apart and found a break (with a continuity test meter) in the coil, right near the top.(visual) The new basket was new, from a well known shop in doncaster. (shalt name names, but because it was not replaced by the shop the warranty was no longer valid) I would suspect this replacement basket was a recone, or reconditioned. Sorry, not trying to take over the OP but I tried to join this break with a thin strip of solder but it would not adhere to the main strip, (the line which runs vertical) is there a special kind of conductive glue they use? KevinE
Well, Ive never had to claim warranty on a basket but I'm surprised they declined as the kits are specifically meant for user-replacement hence the detailed step by step leaflet they include. I've certainly had the coil break right where you say..in fact sometimes intermittently..but have always declined to repair as the clearance of the coil is necessarily tight and they get alot of stick. I see the PV drivers have fairly recently changed in design though all parts are compatible, the new baskets look more spidery (black-widow-like?). Jivemaster
There are hundreds of peavey drivers and through giving them all the details you should get the right one.
johndenim
Yes KevinE the design has changed but are still compatable with each other. You are right about the spider shape, I wonder why they have done this?To those that are not familar with these units the old basket was not as deep, the new one has been designed to be more like a "spider" or claw shaped. I wonder if the voice coil moves more, therefore more SPL? John Denim.
