I've never heard of them or can find any reference. But any DMX device can be controlled from a DMX desk. If a personality doesn't exist then I'm sure it's easy to write one, or request one. Why would RDM be involved?

RDM was just an example, I'm sure there are other ways of triggering simple DMX devives on the congo. I assume the congo has aux channels aswell as RDM.

I simply mentioned RDM because if matty wanted to control the device remotely, he would probably use RMD.

thanks

Thanks guys. Spoke a friend whos a wizz on the congo and said that they are probably one channel so just to patch in scrollers and it should work! The play gets closer...

thetechguy92, I think a bit of research is called for...

...if so then yes, they can be controlled using RDM (remote device management).

Joe, you might want to read up on what RDM actually is. What it isn't is a new way to control devices; what it is is the ability for devices to talk back to the desk over existing cabling. It's fair to say that very few devices, and certainly no 'no-name' products, have RDM built in.

This thing definitely doesn't have RDM as I have checked and I looks about 50 yrs old!! HAs the smallest dip switches I have ever seen!! Managed to get it working using a template for a le maitre hazer. Works really well, we have a bunch of holes center stage and all the smoke comes up as we need people to disappear <_<

Have to admit to being confused by some responses to this, as indeed I was to the OP.

In general smoke machines have a single DMX channel - occasionally 2. Few basic machines will have any more than that.

So why would you need a template or a profile?

A simple DMX unit, one channel, one control channel - just patch where you want and hey presto!

That said, I have no idea how the Congo assigns DMX values, so maybe you DO need a template....

But I somehow doubt it.

Personally I find it useful to have these channels as LTP and so a personality is useful, although that may not have been the reason for the OP. The idea that RDM might be a control protocol was the most surprising part for me!

I can think of one very good reason. On some machines, for instance the Jem ZR24/7, the DMX channel which controls output level also does the prime function when pushed all the way up. Going from full controllable 'smoke' to 30 seconds of flat-out uncontrollable 'smoke' just because you went past DMX value 220 is a bit of a PITA.

As far as I'm aware (correct me if I'm wrong guys) but any DMX device being used on a congo must have a template patched on the desk. Know this because when tried without a template I could not control the device!

Surely you could just patch a generic dimmer channel?

Doesnt work! Needed a 2 channel le maitre template to get the thing running!!
