soundspider
Hi there, Just a quick query about amps and speakers. I'm looking to power 4 RCF MR88 speakers - rated 300W RMS at 8ohms nominal impedance. Am I right in saying that connecting them 2 and 2 gives a resistance of 4 ohms per side? And if that's the case, what size of power amp do I need? I think I read somewhere that the recommended wattage would be 450W per speaker, therefore (if my A-level maths hasn't totally deserted me), I'd need a 2x900W power amp at 4 ohms? And finally, if THAT's the case, any suggestions for which amp? I was looking at Yamaha PS7000S or QSC PLX1804, but very open to (cheaper!) suggestions. Can someone confirm if my figures and reading are right? Hope I've given enough info - if not, let me know what I need to tell you! Alan
MarkPAman
Can someone confirm if my figures and reading are right? Yep :D I'll leave others to talk about amp models as I don't use enough of them to help with this. Lots of other threads here discuss amps though so have a look around. fogg
Its been said many times before but I think the T.amp TA2400 from thomann would do the job fine, little bit more power than you need but will leave you with a nice amount of headroom should you need it. They are a great amp and for the price you can't really go wrong. here a link TA 2400
Matt Riley
Having said that both the PLX and Yamaha are good amps. You could also think about the RMX series which would do the job for a little less cash M
Sirch Sound
Take a look at the crown range of XTI amps, they have been discussed to death on here, and in my opinion a very good amp indeed. Rob beech will be able to provide you with a more detaild report on these amps as he owns a few of them, wereas I am the humble operator of a few. Rob_Beech
Just about to order another 5 actually. Some earlier firmware versions have had their bugs but I think things are pretty much cleared up now. Just watch the volume pots as the nuts can sometimes come loose and it pulls the cover off. This then goes missing under a stage etc. Luckily Crown/Harman are very friendly and have sent me replacements. Worth checking to see if they're all tight. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. johndenim
Not a recommendation of an amp make, but I always have more amp power to speaker wattage ratio. I know this can be a bit dangerous as there is the possibility of blowing your cabs if driven too hard, but a higher power amp reduces the risk of driving it hard, and reduces the risk of clipping.Someone once told me that "running a low rated power amp is like thrashing a 1000cc car,(if the cabs are rated at the same wattage) but using a higher rated power amp is like a cruising with a v8, it will do it all night long" Don't know how true that is but it's always worked for me! John Denim. This is how your ment to spec an amp to a speaker. Its not dangerous at all as long as you know what your doing. In an ideal world the amps should be about twice power of the cabs there powering, however I only have one system (turbosound) were this is actualy the case. Most of my amps are about 25% more powerful than the cabs there driving. Rich
