We Will Rock You Graphics

hi,

ive been given the wonderfully small and simply job of overseeing all of the technical bits n bobs for my schools production of We Will Rock You. Joy. one of the directors requirements is to have much of the imagery that they have in the proper london show, have managed to make some of it with some help from more creative people, but am stumped with one particular problem. one of the scenes requires a projected graphic (using projectors instead of LCD screens) of flying from a lake to wembly stadium, seeing various famour flying characters on the way (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang being 1 of them:S) I have adobe after effects cs3 and premiere pro cs3, but am rather a novice in both them. any ideas of how to create this kinda of effect would be most welcomed. sorry about my poor description of the graphic tht needs to be made, but its very hard to describe, any1 that has seen this show will know what im talkin about (I hope!)

cheers, mctw

Assuming you want to copy the style of the original - a bit of a cop out, really. The technique isn't too difficult but takes a while.

It's all down to layers. Simplest would be to shoot models of the objects against a background you can mask, either as a luminance mask or by a key against green or blue screen (probably what I'd do). The difficult part would be the flying sequence. You can choose to fly the models in on a stick, in real time, or you can take either a still or video sequence and then track it across the frame using keyframes.

If this makes sense - great. If you have AE and PP3 this should make sense - keyframes work in a similar way on both - you can scale and track and the results should be fine, especially as the shot is so quick.

can I suggest using something like an overhead view of the lake you're at, and then zoom miles out wards as if viewing from a space shuttle, and then taking the Match of the day zoom into a football stadium?

thankyou, I had not thought of doing it that way, that should work quite nicely, and doesnt involve to much work and fiddling about with keying. is it possible to use something like google earth do achieve that?? maybe, with the help of screen monkey?

cheers, mctw
