mark_s
Earlier today while setting up for a rehearsal our GSX decided to make a nuisance of itself. On powering up, it came up with the error message 'S/N chip - too busy' (or something similar - my memory is playing up), and the options abort/continue. After cycling the power a few times I managed to get it to boot, but without the application software loaded, essentially turning it into a very expensive bit of scrap. After I quickly found and set up a different desk, I tried powering it up again and it worked fine. My worry is that the next time it will do that 20 minutes before a show and we will be buggered. Does anyone know what could have caused this, and how I can stop it hapening again in the future? I've checked the manual, but the errors/fault-finding section is very limited and doesn't contain much information on specific errors.
Kazeja
My first guess would be an intermittent connection on the serial number chip. Without this chip (no security number) the console goes into a default minimalist state. Same is also true of the 500 series.Whilst powercycling, you may have got lucky and disturbed the console somehow so the chip did make contact (clutching at straws). Suggest open up the unit and make sure everything is plugged fully home. The security chip looks like a small black transistor. Can't remember where it lives on the board, but it may be somewhere in the prom area. Should the console power up in the default state again you may also get the message NOT REGISTERED. Recommend you go to the setup screen and have a look to see if the security chip has been recognised. Bottom right hand section of the monitor. If you get 18 zeros, it hasn't. Please advise how you get on.
mark_s
Whilst powercycling, you may have got lucky and disturbed the console somehow so the chip did make contact (clutching at straws). That's quite possible; I physically moved the console off my desk to make room for the replacement, and started fiddling with it again later on. I'll open it up the next time it's convenient and see if there's anything obviously amiss. If not...well it only has to survive until the end of 'Fame' in July, then the venue gets demolished ;) Thanks for the reply Andy :)
