bruce
I have several events coming up over the summer for which I'll need a few extra 12"+horn speakers-on-sticks. Don't need to be the highest quality. They'll be used in a potentially harsh environment (sometimes outdoors, sometimes by kids) and the economics of it all suggest buying some budget models and not worrying too much if they get damaged. So... any recommendations for moulded 12"+horn passive boxes, at the budget end of the market? Ideally units that have a geometry that allows them to be "angled" for use as monitors. (I guess that a lot of these boxes with different brand names all come out of the same factory :) ) So far, I've been looking at the Studiospares Fortissimo 12P, and the Class-D CD-12P. Both come in at around the £200-per-pair price, and both companies seem to be able to supply replacement drivers. Has anyone heard these units? What were your impressions? Are there any other brands in the same price range that I should consider?
paulears
I use the Thomann ones whenever I have to do stuff like that.http://www.limelight.org.uk/bypass.jpgThey do seem to be quite forgiving, don't sound at all bad, and are pretty tough when dropped. I'm very happy. I bought them for the similarities with the SX300s in the theatre - and they have proven to be excellent value for money. The ones in the picture got soaked, after drying, they performed fine - some screws are a little rusty on the front grill - that's it.
pattonaudio
I have to agree with Paul on this one! I haven't heard the studiospares or Class-D speakers but have heard the Thomann ones and think they are a great little fullrange speaker for the price! and the upside is they come with floor stands for use as floor monitors
weatherhead
A friend of mine had precisely those studiospares models to use with his band, I did sound a couple of times for him...I think they're very worth it for the price, not brilliant but very passable. bruce
Paul - what Thomann units are these - they've got the PA202 (200W) @ 87 pounds and the PA302 (300W) @ 117. I know the range may have changed since you bought them.....
paulears
Those ones are 302's, but I also have their early 'clone' SX300s - I cannot hear a difference!
Rob_Beech
The 302's are great boxes for the money. Do they need to be 12's, I've had great results with the PA110s which are smaller, cheaper etc, but still sound great for the money. As a reference, I put in a single pair of PA110's for a gig in a restaurant for about 250 people and they coped fine as a vocal pa and a bit of keys with a 5 piece band (mine infact). Driven from a Crest CA9 but any suitable amp will do the job.
bruce
To be honest, I hadn't considered a 10 inch - I tend to think of a 12+1 as the minimum sensible config for a "box on a stick". Having said that, my usual "small system" is based on Celestion SR1s, which are 2x8"... so discounting 10" is a bit silly :) So many choices... johndenim
I have heard the class D cabs Bruce, and to be honest they are really not that bad! I would compare the quality to that of budget ev's, peavey impulse that kind of cab.Class D offer the 'jac' range as the best they provide, and although £200 a pair, the sound as I say isn't as bad as you may think. It's a pity you are so far away and can't hear them for yourself. John Denim.
Sirch Sound
I would put another vote for the studiospares cabs, they sound very similar to my RCF Art 322a's, although the RCF is a better cab in general, the studiospares are certainly worth more than 1/10 of the price of the RCF's. jamesperrett
The current Thomann boxes are OK but I thought the older ones that looked more like EV's were better (the newer ones sound a bit dull for my tastes). Cheers James.
cliveybaby
Studiospares boxes are very good for the price as far as I can see they are rebadged Carlsbro cabs thatsell for about 3 times the price but dont quote me on that not a fan of the active versions Also Adam Hall's LD systems cabs are again very good for the price Cliveybaby

bruce
Thanks for all the comments... Looks like I've got positive comments on the Studiospares, ClassD and Thomann offerings - and no real negatives. After some deliberation, I decided to get 4 of the Studiospares units. Tried to place an order a few days ago, but they're out of stock. Sigh. Apparently they'll be back in stock in a couple of weeks.
