16 channel 19" mixer? Which one???

Hello All

I'm in the market for a 19" mixer with 16 XLR inputs! Unless anyone has any useful ideas, my shortlist is either a trusty Allen and Heath WZ16:2 or should I consider the new Soundcraft FX16 mkii? Anyone any ideas... it's replacing a Mackie 1604 VLZ... I just don't like it!

Many thanks in anticipation!

Niether of them is in the same budgetary zone as the others mentioned here, but the APB Dynasonics ProRack is a powerful contender from a company with a reputation for audio quality, and the 16 input rack mountable mixer I would chose above all others is the Yamaha DM1000v2. The DM1k can be up to 48 inputs, but in it's base configuration it has 16 mic pres and 4 XLR line in and 12 XLR line out. Eight groups, 8 aux, and stereo.

I've been hearing lots of really good things about APB Dynasonics from colleagues in the US, but how is their sales/support network in the UK and Europe? Their web site simply says they're looking for export distributors.

As for the mixers I have personal experience with, another vote from me for the A&H Mix Wizard which is definitely a favourite of mine for sound quality, reliability, after sales service and re-sale value. However, I'm not as anti the Soundcraft FX16 as some seem to be...I've done some decent stuff on one and don't mind them at all.

If you have deeper pockets, I love my Yamaha DM1000 to bits...and, depending on the amount of outboard you might need, when you factor this into the equation the cost might not seem quite so high--and if you ever need to expand there aren't many other mixers that (with the right expansion cards and pre-amps) can give you up to 48 channels in 19 inches wide!

I too have no problem with the FX16, either mk1 or mk2. I've mixed a couple of shows on both! And I think its unfair to bash these desks, they do the job at not too bad a price! Just get a flightcase for them and they'll be fine  That APB thing-me-wotter looks not bad too! Have to confess I hadn't even heard of it, but I'd be happy to give it a go at any rate!

And I second the DM1000, there's a couple kicking around in Edinburgh and Aberdeen and they are very nice desks. Possibly a bit expensive for the OP though (if they're looking at wiz end of things).

"Resolution Distribution, part of KV2 Audio in the UK, has announced that they have been appointed as sole UK & Eire distributor for APB Dynasonics products". (ET Now).

I'd guess that since a) Andy Symonds represents KV2, b) he used to represent Crest UK c) Chuck Augustowski moved from Crest to form APB that the two still have some contact ;-)

However, I still can't find any details about APB from the KV2 website....

Andy does frequent the Blue Room - perhaps he might chip in.

the GB2R preamps are nasty

An interesting opinion... Can you explain further? I've not sat down and listened to the GB range, but have used the mid range Soundcraft stuff quite a bit. It's different from A&H but not what I'd call "nasty"?
