Catholic Saint Figures

Recommended Posts

I am currently working on a production of "The Lonesome West" during which 48 figures of saints get smashed each performance (very close to the auidence as it is in our studio space which is traverse so bits flying off is an issue too). We have worked out that this means we will need 2592 for the run! We don't have a prop making department, and really don't want to spend the whole summer making these ourselves. Has anyone got a cunning plan we haven't thought of (we have tried googling every version of cathoic religious saint christian statue figure figurine etc we can think of).

I guess it depends on how good your making skills are but you could look at calving some from Styrofoam and scrimming, then cutting (maybe 3 strategic cuts each) and Velcroing them back together. Depends how close the audience are and if they are moved about and things.

I will have a look when back at the office but, from what I remember, South West Industrial Plasters will do casts or can certinaly advise on the best way to go about it.

Have you a desired design size for these icons? Somewhere between too small to notice and too big?

Remember that "smashed" doesn't mean "to 100 mesh dust"!

You have 48 per show, Several of these could be broken just in one place, or in only a few places. This way they can be rebuilt with ease and some Blue Peter engineering to break there again. You may find that this is the show that requires you to have a props building place.

Search TIRANTI ( www.tiranti.co.uk/ ) for a moulding materials supplier.

With a little planning 50% of these could be reused repeatedly as they break in pre-cut places for re-assembly. Can you make enough realistically pre prepared icons that a few real, totally smashed ones is an easy replace job?

About this time last during an opera we smashed a statue of the baby Jesus 8 shows a week - Aside from obviously being struck down and otherwise smited from on high it was fairly easy to achieve.

There is a stall in Shepherds Bush market that does some scary figurines - mostly painted plastic, but do look real, and they are fairly used to me going and asking for them to get things in in bulk. We gently removed (sawed off with a leatherman) the head and other strategic parts, and held them together with white tack until the time came for him to be smashed. I'd definately give them a try - I don't have thier phone number - but pop down to the market and they usually have a stall at the Uxbridge road end of the market.

You could get some figures of saints from the Catholic shop near Westminter Catherdal. But it will not be cheap, the last figure I brought cost £50 which was about a foot height. I agree with alot with what has been said above either you pre-break the figures so they can be re-used. Or you Find cheap figures (not religious) and mix them in Catholic figures just breaking the cheap figures.
