On a similar subject, I've just ordered a new Dell Inspiron laptop. Anyone have any comments or good/bad experiences to share?

I have an old Dell Inspiron 7000 (PentiumII 333) that I bought as a factory-refurbished machine 4 1/2 years ago, and it's still going strong. It's had a new, bigger HDD, a memory upgrade and a DVD-ROM, and one of the two screen locking 'flanges' has snapped off, but apart from that it's still going strong and doing sterling service for those times when I need a PC and I'm away from my desk. Would recommend Dell to anyone who's looking to buy a laptop.

yeah id second that, dell do make some of the best laptops, although im on an 'Acer travelmate' at the moment an its pretty good, been knocked about a hell of alot, with me falling asleep with it on me, and being moved everywhere, an its still going strong, good HDD, graphics and Ram to.

but yeah id second the dell recomendation, amazing things, plus they look good, which is also a factor to take into concideration

if they are anything like the desktops, they're great - speedy with the nastiest of programs [*cough* Wysiwyg] and win xp.

look good too - all in black and sturdy too.

cheers

I had a few problems a couple of years back with a new desktop (corrupt HDD etc) and it tends to play up a bit every now and again, maybe I just had one of the friday afternoon batch B-)

Still it has served its purpose.

Out of interest, anyone got a Tiny laptop?? I have one on its way, just wondering what people think.

Ok, so I've got my nice new laptop which is supposed to be a 3.06 Ghz. Except I'm not entirely sure if it really is. This link is a screenshot from the 'System' tab of the control panel - the window behind it is a performance report from www.pcpitstop.com.

So what does it all mean??

Don't the mobile Pentiums drop their clock speed when they can, in order to prolong battery life?

My old Dell had an icon in the system tray to tell me when it had done this - looked a bit like a chequered flag as I recall. Try poking round the Control panel (or whatever it might be called now on XP) and see if you can modify the processor power saving/ speed settings, at least temporarily.

Ive got a dell 8200 and yes the keys do scratch the screen over time. What is worse though is the small joystick mouse in the middle of the keyboard. my advice to anyone that ones one is to take the cap off. Other wise you will have a small dot on your screen within a few months. dell recomend keeping the protective plastic between the keyboard and the screen but frankly I cant be bothered. Very happy with dell though, had a minor problem with the screen and intermittent sound a few months ago and they were on site the next day with replacement parts. very good.
