CV advice

@ boatman: I've removed that part now anyway but thanks for the correction ;)

Ok, Here's draft 2.

Here's a list of the changes I've made:

  • Created a new header and changed the font of the entire CV
  • I couldn't find space for d.o.b/age - is this ok to not include it?
  • Have cut down education section
  • Have changed headings to try and define more clearly that "SBI" was a paid job and the others (listed in "practical experience) were voluntary
  • Have put sound skills before lighting as this is what I'm primarily interested in
  • Have added vocals to sound skills (but have kept the other instruments as I like it :) unless most people think its unnecessary?)
  • Have merged lighting desks together in lighting skills
  • Have removed "program DMX addresses"
  • Have defined which Martin lights I've used - is this now too much detail?
  • Have changed "Produce suitable lighting designs for each act giving consideration to the song styles and ambience of the event" to "Produce small scale lighting designs"
  • Have kept "computer building" but have changed it from "Windows based" to "x86 based" - is this now the correct term?
  • Have included "Outdoor live music concert..." which I thought might be relevant to include
  • Have removed "career objectives" to instead possibly put on the covering letter

Ok! I know its a long list but for those who have been following the thread, I thought it might be easier for you to see what I've changed.

If you could have another look and see if I'm on the right lines, or completely off track, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks again,

Rich

For your previous employment I prefer to see "Time Period: Job Title - At Company" with a description underneath, it takes less time to read, and brings the information straight to their attention, rather than having to read through it.

I'd also make the skills stand out, i.e. put the "Lighting", "Sound" in bold/underlined.

Cheers Zonino. I've made those changes recommended, so do you think everything else is fine as I've just spotted a job that I'd like to apply for so ideally want to send it off sooner rather than later?

Thanks again :)

Well, I've just posted it so now its time to play the waiting game! I wrote a covering letter and ensured the cv was relevant to the (very brief) job description that was provided.

Now I'm gonna make a list of places to send it to and then send it out to see if there's any work going.

Thanks for everyones support - I'll let you know how I get on :) Fingers crossed...

  • 1 month later...

I know this thread is a bit old now but I've just remembered it! Just wanted to thank everyone for their help with my CV writing. I was offered the job earlier this week <_<

Thanks again and hopefully I can return the favour one day :D
