deranged-angel
Hi All,I'm a little confused...We're looking at buying some Chroma Q scrollers at work and pricing up all the bits we need. We're looking at 6 scrollers and have been quoted for an 8 way PSU but the guy said we could daisy chain the scrollers together. So, is there actually a need for the 8 way or could we buy a 2-way?The theatre is 12m wide by 14m deep so we'd be using quite a lot of cable. I've read on some prev. posts that the cable length makes a difference but how much? Thank you!!! Em
Steve Cavill
It all depends how many units the Scrollers take up, thats the crack with the ChromaQ stuff I do believe. So, if a scroller requires 1.5u, and you have an 8 way PSU (which gives 8u), you can run 5 scrollers from this PSU, obviously a 2 way PSU gives out 2u. Its all in the specs somewhere on the AC site. Mr Steve
Typically, a scroller on a Par 64 of 1km Fresnel etc will take up one unit. Therefore an 8 way PSU will power up to 8 scrollers. If you get a 2 way PSU, you will only be able to power 2 scrollers on the daisy chain.
deranged-angel
Thanks for your replies. Sorry to sound stupid, I imagined it being 8 outputs and I thought that if I daisychained them together, it would only need 1 output because I'd only be plugging one in to the unit, if that makes any sense?! I get it now though - an 8 way PSU doesn't necessarily mean there are 8 x 4 pin XLR sockets, it means it can power 8 items at 1 unit per item. With muchos gratitude, as always, Em
johnhuson
The theatre is 12m wide by 14m deep so we'd be using quite a lot of cable. I've read on some prev. posts that the cable length makes a difference but how much? The 8-way PSU is designed for around a 60m loop length, and as the name implies it's advised to take a link back out of the last device back to the PSU. Whilst I have managed to have fairly large systems without a return, the voltage drop on the line is clearly noticeable as you get further down the line and I wouldn't advise it unless your stuck (as I was). Ynot
To maybe put a little more clarity on the answer, the '8' in 8-way refers to the max number of scrollers that can be driven from that PSU, and NOT (on any scroller setup I've come across) the number of physical outlets available. And in most cases the scroller PSU will have an output and a return input as the cables must be linked back as a ring, not as a spur.
johnhuson
I think this maybe over simplifying it a little Ynot, as Steve stated above the Chroma Q scrollers are rated in PU to determine how much power they draw (some 1PU others 1.5PU). The 8-way PSU provides 8PU which means if your using Chroma Q Universal scrollers for example which are rated at 1.5PU you can actually only run a maximum of five off the 8-way PSU.
