Matt F
Hi, Would this http://www.solotechnic.co.uk/console-lamp-XLR-i23673.html gooseneck lamp run from a Soundcraft FX16 mixer? If so, how would you power it? I'm guessing you just plug it into a channel with the volume slider right up, with phantom power on. Is this correct? Thanks,Matt
boatman
NO Guess again. You may save yourself £11.91 in the purchase of such a lamp, but you'll spend a lot more than that on getting your desk repaired. Edited to emphasise reply.
Light Console
No, this sort of thing is normally powered by a dedicated socket on the unit. From memory, the FX16 does not have such a socket. The lamp will probably be only 12v, phantom power is 48v. Your best bet is to find something like this which can be cliped somewhere near the mixer.Good luck! boatman
Just had a quick search of CPC and here's a one with it's own dimmer http://cpc.farnell.com/DP28168.
Seano
<snip> but you'll spend a lot more than that on getting your desk repaired.Edited to emphasise reply. That certainly was emphatic. What repairs do you think would be necessary? Are Soundcraft desks particularly prone to exploding when their phantom power output is shorted? Not that its not a daft idea, but afaik most pro desks wouldn't suffer any permanent damage whatsoever.
RoyS
I have in the past added 2 LED gooseneck lights to a 16 channel soundcraft. These lights require 12V and their current consumption is minimal. I opened the cases and added a small fixed voltage regulator to the main power rail, which I recall was +17v, the o/p of the reg being 12V. I added 2 BNC sockets and switch and Bob's your uncle. The external power supply for the desk was very over specified and this extra current draw went unoticed. The desk has continued to work fine following this mod.. Cheers. mervaka
yeah, soundcraft desks usually have +-17v rails, and a 48v phantom rail (and of course a 0v rail)
Jivemaster
Best you buy a separate lamp or buy the manufacturers lamp. Desks usually have a socket to supply the lamp, BUT some goosenecks connect the metal body to a supply pin and this can short out a supply rail and close the mixer down. Adding bits of circuitry inside something isn't for the faint hearted.
gnomatron
Sorry to confuse matters a bit, but there are lamps designed to be used with phantom power. They're not very common, but they're handy for small desks that don't have a light. I have one myself; it's rather dull, and just has a single blue led, but it's pretty convenient. You don't need to turn the channel up to use them, obviously. However, any gooseneck like that will be very clearly marked as such, and the vast majority of XLR goosenecks will be designed for use in dedicated lamp sockets in desks.
