noiseboybrandt
Hello everyone I'm currently conducting research for my university dissertation and would be very grateful if any of you industry pro’s out there would take a moment to answer these questions. Questions: What recent technological advancement has had the biggest impact on your work? What advantages/disadvantages has this brought to you? How has the development of any recent technology enabled you to become more creative with you work? Has the development of any recent technology strengthened your link with the performing artist? Many Thanks Jason Brandt :o
paulears
I'd suggest replacing the last question with an open ended one - you're bound to get plenty of yes or no answers.
Ynot
Hmmm... Haven't we already had one of these not so long back....?
Just Some Bloke
Hmmm... Haven't we already had one of these not so long back....?There was something about projection and something about lighting but I don't remember one about sound. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!
lightsource
To answer all the questions in one go..... I personally don't feel there have been many technological advancements over the last decade or so that have had a major impact on sound. (Well possibly the Line Array could be an exception, or software that I could mention). I think the main technological development is product price, weather it's Amps, Speakers, Outboard or consoles. The advantages are that users can add more kit for their budget....Disadvantages... could start a new topic on it's own! More creative? We amplify the sound.......... And try to make it sound good! Don't know if this could be classed as creative B-) I would say it has strengthened the link with artists, as it is easier / cheaper to get a better sound, and we're getting good feedback from the bands (not the mics :D ) I must also say though, you still need a good engineer to make any system sound right, weather it's Behringer or Turbosound. lightsource
Well, quite suprised no one has commented on this subject. I'm not quite happy with my quick response earlier....as I've had a bit more time to think about it. I still agree with myself in the fact there haven't been too many new technolological advancements in the world of sound.....Yes there are some.... but only a few. I think the biggest impact over the last few years is probably the vast range of price reductions for various pieces of equipment. Also, just as technology, the size of the gear is reducing, in the pound per watt. Just look at The Powersoft amps...upto 9kW, in a 1U rack space.....Unheard of 10 years ago..... Speaker cabs are following in a similar way. Higher SPL's for a smaller footprint. In the 80's or probably the 90's for that matter, the '£ per watt was far higher than it is today). And the quality MAY :) be better also. Then there's the outboard... workable outboard starts at little more than 50 quid. Behringer are leading the way. But I would also say here, that you get what you pay for...... So while the cheaper products are reasonable, and do the job......there's no substitute for quality product. And unfortunatley, you have to pay for it. An I making any sense :)
blackrose
I wouldn't mind giving this a shot but if people disagree with me let me know this is from the point of view of coperate sound where its in and out the same night Questions: What recent technological advancement has had the biggest impact on your work?optical multicores on digital desks What advantages/disadvantages has this brought to you?advantages: speed, becasue its light its much faster to run out than a trad multi. versatilaty, it can handle many more channels than a trad multi disadvantages: cost, the connectors alone are worth about £2000 for the digico and the cable isnt cheep either becasue the cable and conectors are so fragile you have to be really carefull How has the development of any recent technology enabled you to become more creative with you work?only in the fact that due to the size of an optical multi (aprox 10mm in diameter) we can hide it better. Has the development of any recent technology strengthened your link with the performing artist?not that I can think of I hope this helps mate
