Helen c
hi I am currently doing my A2 levels and for theatre studies, I have been asked by my group to produce a judges gown, I am finding it hard to find any detailed images. I do textiles and am fairly happy with pattern drafting but it would be really useful if anyone knew where I could find a ready made pattern as opposed to having to draft one myself! Also, what substances that are fairly cheap, can be hygenically used to "mess up" a costume: it is for Azdak in The Caucasian Chalk Circle, a character with little care for clean clothes and he has just been beaten up ioncluding being thrown to the floor. Thanks, any suggestions would be great Helen
w/robe
Helen Welcome to the Blue Room. I do not know of a pattern for a judges robe the nearest I can find are in Patterns of Fashion 1560-1620 by Janet Arnold (ISBN 0-333-38284-6) look at the robe no. 37 on page 98 and the loose gown on page 118.You could also try asking Ede and Ravenscroft, who make them, if they have any reference they would be willing to send you. Also if you can find a teachers gown to look at they are made in a very similar way. As for dirtying down if you do not want the dirt to come out again use emulsion paint and/or car spray (in a well ventilated etc. etc.). How the dirt looks on stage under lights will be very different to how it looks close to, usually you require more than you think but do a little at a time and then look at it, you can always add more. propsman
watered down emulsion paint, or a can of "dirty down" (available in various colours) sand paper, always good for ageing or making things look dirty and maybe a little fake blood if he has just been in a fight!
