Jamtastic3
HI BR,I have a broken Trelco and I think it could be because of the 'test' button on it, as it doesn't seem to do anything now. Nothing (electronically) inside has changed since it was working last month but now its kaput!. Can I just bypass the test button or is there more involved? Cheers
discosi
I personally have never seen a Trelco with an RCD, are you talking about a 3-way 15A Splitter? All of my Trelco's are a short piece of TRS with 15A plug on one end and a molulded 3-Way 15A Socket Bar. Make sure the casing of Trelco sockets is intact, the plug wiring is correct & safe, if you can get into the socket section then check for safety - if not throw it away. If you're having electrical problems with a piece of kit where you can't access the connections (i.e. moulded plugs / sockets) then chop off and replace or throw away if necessary. Jamtastic3
Discosi, your description matches my Trelco (the TRS, moulding etc) Explanation:The trelco is a 3x15A extension and on the face, there is a little button named 'TEST'. When you push it, the lights plugged into the sockets will cut out until you release the button. On the broken one, the button 'on' or 'off' still doesn't do anything to make the sockets work. One thing about these trelcos is that you can open up the moulding but you can't open up the plug on the TRS as it's all sealed (a 'moulded plug'?) Andrew C
The "button" isn't an RCD, but a thermal cut-out designed to prevent you putting a 45A load on the 15A plug. If you can open the socket, you probably CAN bypass it. SHOULD you is a different question. I wouldn't.
Ike
I thought it was a reset button not a test button? If this is the case surely it shouldn't do anything unless it has tripped?
maeterlinck
I think this is a case of if you have to ask you shouldn't do. The reset button (which is all I can imagine it is) is a safety feature. If you are competent at PAT testing then you should be able to identify basic problems with it. gareth
Older Trelcos had this safety cutout - and it's a pain in the ass. It says a lot that the manufacturers removed that "feature" from later versions ... I suspect in response to popular demand from users who were fed up of having to go up into the rig to reset the trips on temperamental Trelcos which had decided to pop out for absolutely no reason ...
