Mattlx
Im LD'ing a production of les mis next week, and was recomended to beamlights as followspots. so have ordered them and came today. The beam size is bit big, but my main problem is the light distributuion. ITS AWFUL. the beam is really broken up and patchy. The lantern is fairly clean and tidy so Im at a bit of a dead end?????? :) ANY advice on how to solve either problem would be muchly appreciated. matt
estra
Are the bulbs dirty or greasy? try wiping them with some meths to get the grease from people's hands off. Ed
Ken Coker
Well....if I were going there I wouldn't start from here.... Beamlight is a, however,a good place to start. You are using the 24v version aren't you? Where are they positioned? The usual place to find beamlights as followspots is either on the pros perches or on the overhead bridges/trusses. If you're throwing from the back of the house, you may want to think of another instrument.... Try the "Beam adjustment by means of convenient rear knob" to flatten the field, possibly with a touch of light frost...... KC
gareth
What Ken said. Try the beam adjustment knob on the back - it moved the lamp forwards and backwards in the reflector, and if it's been wound too far you'll get a sort of "doughnut" type of effect (black hole in the middle of the beam). What kind of beamlight have you got? R&V? Strand? Edit : Sorry, just noticed the title of the thread states that they're Strand (or "Stand" ...) Mattlx
Thanks for all your advice, I did get it but didnt have time to reply as was using a box office computer. I think the problem was a mix of grime and focus (still nt sure but they now work fine) Thanks much! :-)Matt
paulears
Somebody recommended beam lights? For the schools edition of Les Mis? What strange advice. In the hands of skilled ops, at the right distance, they can look nice, adding something a bit different in beam quality - but usually without plenty of other lighting, they kind of look a bit 'lost'. Is it a big venue?
Tomo
Somebody recommended beam lights? For the schools edition of Les Mis?Doesn't half sound like somebody saw the West End version and noticed the beamlights. If they'd been paying attention, they'd also notice how incredibly close to the stage they are! (and how physically big beamlights are) They do look nice though - shame I've never worked in a venue that could use them effectively.

We use 1k Beamlights at the Crescent as followspots, from FOH bridge 1 (cloest to the stage). Can actually be very effective in more atmospheric pieces where a hard edge isn't suitable.
