Creating a Magic Mirror

Hi there, Wondering if you can help

I am currently working on a production where a magic mirror is needed.

I am looking to source a material that reflects like your conventional mirror - but when light is put behind it you can see a person standing behind the 'mirror' so a bit like a gauze only it reflects :)

would really appreciate all help

Thank You

Thank You Both For Your Replies

If a soft reflection is OK for you then Lee 270 will do the trick. I've used it a few times. It's surface is a bit crinkly so will reflect light but not give a sharp mirror image.

coudl you possible send me a link or a retailer I can't seem to find it on google

Thanks Again

I've actually done an amdram performance of Scrooge which needed something like this. Essentially what we did was use a sheet of perspex at an angle (Actor was out of sight to provide a ghost-like image) you need to light the actor quite strongly, and it doesn't reflect the surroundings particularly well unless they are strongly lit too. But it's certainly a fairly cheap alternative that may work. Depends how much of a reflective mirror you need!

"Rosco Shrink Mirror" film used to be perfect for this purpose. However you will need to check a sample before you buy as I've heard a rumour that it may now have an opaque packing. Rosco also make a "Thin Silver Mirror" which may do the trick but I don't know whether it is shrinkable.

Try emailing Rosco UK - they are very helpful.

Sadly you are correct, Rosco Shrink Mirror now has an opaque backing. I have had great success using solar film; the material used on office windows and/or to pimp ones ride. It is designed to be applied to glass(obviously) but it also works on plastic. Moreover, if you are really careful with the hairdryer you can stretch it on a frame and heat shrink it.
