Sound Roles

Hi Louis,

Is this a project set by your college? If so perhaps you tell us what research you have already done and maybe ask some more specific questions after you have some answers, but need to know more.

No. I just see alot of west end shows i.e... musicals and wanted to know what the roles were and what bit of sound each of the No's controlled ect....

or

sound 1 Main FOH mix

sound 2 mix assistant

sound 3 on stage radio mics

sound 4 - not sure I've come across this one.

We're assuming so much without specifics. So I'm guessing you've seen these in the show programme? It's just a way of indicating the hierarchy of the sound department with the most senior person as No. 1 doing the mix. Sometimes, in an effects busy show, a separate person gets allocated as assistant to him/her but this role may not be there at all - if the show is effects light. Somebody will be doing radio mic duties - and again, if there are two people, it's an extra number!

In genera, it's good for people to be able to cover upwards, so No. 2 may cover for 1. Sometimes, depending on the team, if No.1 is missing, everyone could move up one, but then you get a show with slightly less experienced people on every job - so in many cases, they'll pick the most suitable person. Just to mess this up, some shows have a monitor mixer - who might be Sound 2 - I'm sure you get the idea. LX tend to have proper titles - follow spot op, board op, ass. board op, stage lx etc etc - sound seem happy with a number.
