mikeburnie
We are looking to purchase some blacks for our theatre but are not sure what size to get with regards to gather. The height and type of fixing aren't a problem but what is the 'norm' for width ? Is it better to go for double the width required to allow for gathering or for 1.5 times the width for legs ? Also is it wise to use the same approach for the big black to go along the back of the stage ? Double or 1.5 times the width or something else. Thanks for any advice
gareth
If you want blacks with 'fullness' (the expression for that 'gathered-up' look that you seem to be after), it's normal to have them made that way rather than using flat blacks that you have to gather on the bar every time you hang them. It's usual to specify "50% fullness" for this kind of thing - that is, the width of the actual material is 1.5 times the width of the finished black, and is pleated during manufacture. w/robe
What blacks are you thinking of?Legs and full blacks are normally hung flat, so have no fullness, which IMHO looks cleaner and more professional. Gathered legs always remind me of schools or village halls. Half blacks require fullness (at least 1.5 times width) for when you track them.
