Andy!
In relation to that IF program BBC IF about electricity in 2010 does that mean people like me who wants to get into theatre tech may have a risk due to stopping of shows or something? What do you think will happen?
Bryson
If the power needs of our society can no longer be met, I'd guess that stopping the show is the last thing we'll be worrying about...
Jivemaster
We already generate less than we use and import electricity from France via cross channel cable ( 11% of our useage) 25%of our power comes from nuclear-- already under threat from the green lobby. Lose those and london and birmingham go dark. The grid is under strain cos its trying to move power from newer gas fired power stns to new towns that wer not even thought of when the grid was planned. The commercial nature of the wholesale elec market has already bankrupt several newer gas fired plants and mitigates against the massive investment required for new plants and grid. The problem lies partly in the nature of efficient generation. The big stations need to generate continuously The coal/steam stations take up to a day to run up to speed and power so they are used for base load cover, The gas turbine stations take an hour or so to run up to full power. Dinorwick will come on in minutes to cut humps off then it needs to pump the water back up again

ChrisP
(Jivemaster @ 11 Mar 2004, 07:55 PM) Dinorwick will come on in minutes to cut humps off then it needs to pump the water back up again Top fact of the day: Dinorwig can get up to its full power in less than 16 seconds! And stay there for six hours!! It is a pity that we cannot build more of those types of power stations!!
paulears
bacton gas terminal near me brings in our gas - but Bacton itself isn't on the network at all - electricity, bottled gas and oil are only choices!
