UV Lighting

quick question. I'm about to embark upon a project about contamination. I was wondering if the only UV lights that you can get are the strip light ones?

Also, though it's not necessary to do with lighting, have you any ideas of how UV markers can be applied to people without them noticing? As in, I know of body paints and pens, but does anybody know if there is a type of mist or anything like that which would help?

I'm trying to 'contaminate' the audience as they walk around so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Johnnie

You can get standard UV cannons, these can be hired from most of the usual hire companies.

A quick google search brought up this which could be pretty interesting, an LED UV wall. I don't know if it's actually UV, or just resembling the effect: http://www.uvgear.co.uk/product/product173.htm

You can also get UV floodlights, again these are fairly easy to hire from the usual suspects.

As a way of discreetly contaminating people...you realise that whatever you do is most likely going to stain the clothing they people are wearing, and that it more than likely won't wash out, meaning that every time they go near a UV source they are going to glow!

However, ignoring that fact, as I assume you've already thought of that. You can get a UV bubble mixture that you just add to bubble fluid in a bubble machine. when it lands on clothing etc it stains it, and when UV light is present it will glow: http://www.uvgear.co.uk/product/product40.htm

I guess that it would be possible to add something such as this: http://www.uvgear.co.uk/product/product44.htm to a smoke fluid, and that would distribute it. However, I don't think this will be particularly good for the machine. Depending on the budget and size of what you're doing, you could just buy a cheap machine from Maplins or whatever and then throw it out if it stops working after the demonstration.

Hope that is of some use to you,

Tim

Do Not Add That Fluid To A Smoke Machine!!!!

The suppliers website clearly states "Do Not Injest" so people breathing it in with the smoke is a No-No.

You should never add ingredients to smoke fluids unless specifically designed for this purpose - which this fluid isnt.

if you are attempting to secretly mark people, then I suspect that you could be in deep water. Let's say I discovered I'd been seretly contaminated with some kind of UV solution without my express permission - how much would the cleaning cost? and, if it didn't come out, then replacement clothes. Imagine people who work in UV environments - apart from the obvious entertainment aspects, where contaminating blacks making them fluoresce would ruin them, how abut people in the medical fields - I'd guess having faces and hands that glowed would be pretty unwelcome.

Deliberately contaminating people is frankly - scary!

I read it as more of a benign, non-toxic way of marking people to show how much something can happen (like a person with a cold shaking hands and making people sick).

Regardless, doing anything to people without their consent is opening up a door for trouble. Social experiment date-rape if you will.

This just reminded me of a thing I did with aftershave. Had 2 people at the start of event in the audience with aftershave on their hands going round meeting people and saying hi, as you do! At the start of the event we got everyone to smell their hands and most of them could smell the aftershave as it had passed from one to another as people had met and shaken hands with one another!

I dont know whether this would work with UV liquid, such as the bubble liquid in another post, but it may be worth a try - I would recommend testing before the event!

Don't some clear alchoholic drinks such as Smirnoff Ice glow when exposed to UV? If you really must secretly tag someone so that they gow under UV light, at least they can wash the alchohol out of their clothing without it staining.

Tonic Water glows under UV light. It is the Quinine contained in it that causes this effect.

Hi Johnnie,

Go back and have a look at post #2 and Tims link to UVgear. If you check out their security products page you'll see items designed to do what you want.

As regards the come back from secretly 'contaminating' people, that could be a problem, it's bad enough in panto where the audience ought to know that they might get squirted with water or hit by a flying sweety.
