mjriley
I have been asked to produce some reccomdations for a small single\dual preset desk ideally with 12\24 channels. I have looked arond a bit and seen the jester 12\24 by Zero88 and it looks ideal I just want to know your feeling about this desk mjr
mac.calder
Either the Jester or the maXim S. They are both extremely similar, and both great desks, I just prefer the programming style on the maXim a bit more (since my first desk was an atom)
benweblight
There's also the ETC Smartfade desks. We have the Jester at school and it works perfectly, but as mac.calder says, it may depend on which programming style your prefer.
Mexi
I used a jester a couple of weeks ago at the panto. Considering I dont do lighting very often, it was very easy to programme. The venue we mainly use had a Strand GSX (?) board which I personally find harder to programme without reading the book. Its worth buying a monitor with it, makes things a lot easier. TBH the only thing that I found really annoying was having to enter Q names via a mobile phone style numeric keypad.
eviljohn2
The ETC Smartfade is a great desk but may be overkill considering what the OP asked for. One of my favourites in fact although I wish it had an internal PSU. :P
gareth
Steady on chaps! The OP asked fora small single\dual preset desk ideally with 12\24 channels, so what's with all this talk of Smartfades, adding monitors, and other such guff? Over the top, surely (unless the OP actually wants more than he asked for! :P). Sounds like a Strand 100 (or similar) would do the job very nicely - nice and cheap, as well! HobitLight
It depends on what you want to use it for. If it's for a basic two preset operation a second hand Alcora would be fine. But if it's for a theatre type thing the Jester would be fine as it has a Cue Stack and you can use Submasters. I used one last night (24/48 version with 24 channels) and it was really easy to use. If you do though, I'd say to get the monitor, especially if busking live as you can prewiew memories and see the names of submasters/cues.

I thought that...but given the OP says he has looked at the Jester and it 'looked ideal', it seems like he's after something a little more complex than a basic two preset desk and has the budget for it; could be wrong though. TBH the only thing that I found really annoying was having to enter Q names via a mobile phone style numeric keypad. You can also enter with the up/down keys, which I found a bit faster. HobitLight
I've just found this review of the Jester. One thing I will mention from it is that a monitor is pretty much essential as it's quite hard to view cues, patch, etc... without it.
steve h
The school I work at have just bought a jester. One of the things I liked about it is tht its very easy to teach kids on, especially those who have not done anything like it before. I dont know whether this is something you would have to do, buts I know its something I took into consideration when looking at my options. steve edit: typo
mjriley
Thanks for all your replys I am going soon to have a demo of some of the desks mentioned including the jester to see which one is most suited to my situation.
Nick S
I'd actually say the Jester was a more advanced and much easier to use desk than the Smartfade. I just bought a SmartFade for a theatre group - the only reason was because I could be guaranteed better support. As you're in the UK, this isn't really a problem, and I can't see much of a reason to go for anything other than the Jester, if that's what you're looking at.
