Hi guys,

Really want to do a C&G in electrical installation but I want to run it along side my current degree studies, therefore distant learning.

Does anyone know of colleges that offer these courses?

If you mean your 2330 you really do need to be employed as an electrician. 2391 might be your best bet however the first part requires practical assessment making distance learning difficult. 2381 can probably be done without too much hassle but (in my opinion) is worthless without lots of relevant (provable) experiance.

2381 and each part of 2391 can probably be done in a few days if you have your wits about you, It might be worth contacting a few local colleges and seeing if they do them as short courses.

This may not help you directly Oli but anyone studying for the BSc (Hons) Lighting Design & Technology and BSc (Hons) Live Event Technology courses at the University of Glamorgan undertakes the IET 17th Edition Electrical Wiring Regulations (C&G) as standard in their first year.

If you are looking to work as an electrician be this in television or theatre the IET 17th is a very valuable 'extra' qualification that will help stand you out amongst other candidates when applying for jobs. It also leaves the door open to a career outside the arts should you decide to go that way.

Interestingly enough the 17th Edition is actually the 2381 I mentioned (well actually it's 2391 2382 but the change in number only refers from the difference in 16th and 17th) as being worthless without lots of relevant (electrical) experiance.

I'm not saying you're wrong but are you actually sure it helps and people don't just assume it does? The view amongst colleagues seems to be that it needs a 'classroom' overview of BS7671 and in no way prepares you for any real electrical work. Unlike 2330 and 2391 it isn't even considered on our applications.

That said I am basing this on my experiance of only a couple of industrial electrical companies so your mileage may vary.

hello all, I like how so many people get confused bout all these electrical courses avaiable and how they are able to do them, firsty you do not have to work on a site to complete any off these courses, it will only make it easier. the only course you need to be on site for is the nvq quailfication but this is only for the evidence side, but working in this industry you do not need to have a nvq all you need is the no how and theory from the courses.

the first course is the 2330 pt 1/2 which is the new easier course (all the exams are multiple choice rather then the the old 3 hour written exams) and the previous course the 2351 pt 1/2, in both these you the part 1 which is 2 normally 2 years day realease or a year full time (but can be done quicker) this covers alot of basic practical, theory and testing and inspect, you dont really have final exams as you do them as you complete units. then there is the part 2 this is only a year day realease but is more difficult as this cover alot of the 3 phase and the science and motors, again you dont really have and final exams it is all done after the units are completed. I beleive there is no such evening courses avaible for these course due to the length of time it takes to complete them.

the next course is the 2390/2391 which is the testing and inspection course, you only touch on it in the other courses, this comprises of a number of practical exams and a final written exam. working on site makes it easier but I no alot of people that have never even seen a test and have no experience walk through this course. this is normally done as a evening course and should take about 10 weeks.

the other courses are avaible is the nvq which is the 2356 and after that you will need do complete the am2, but I am under the impression these aint really that important in this industry but I no they are a must if working on a site, as you will nee these to become graded as an electrican.

the 16th edition 2381 and the 17th edition 2382 are only courses the explain all the current rule and regs and changes, these are covered by the pt 1/2 so these are normal only used as refreshers, but the 17th will be in by july so we will all have to do that.

also there is pat testing which is only a day course.

most colleges offer all these courses but the downside is it can be very expensive. I hope that has help someone

oh hello sarah.
