Hi Carl,

Just to clarify, do you mean a popper stopper, something like this:

Clicky!

The one noted above is a fairly decent Shure one which is quite pricey do you do get the quality

Hi James

No there a plastic circle which gets clipped onto the stand so that it stops the the person in front getting all the impact and it stops it spilling into Mic that are in front when there in the pit !!!

While there could be a tiny benefit to a popper stopper on a trunpet, if the player had lungs of steel, very little of a sax's sound comes out of the bell - most escapes through the open holes, when the pads are up - even when playing the lowest notes, not an awful lot of wind is heard, compared to the sound of the instrument you want to hear. Trumpets have lots of power up top, but if you've ever tried to just blow a ttrumpet or any brass instrument without using the lips, it's a bit like those gadgets that test your lung function - there's no resistance and blowing out a candle at a foot is nigh on impossble! That's why nobody normally bothers that much - wind noise isn't a problem - and the small filters in most mics are quite capable of dealing with it.

Carl, I know exactly what you mean, however I don't know what they are called!

What I think he is talking about is a clear, cirular acrylic shield, about 6-8 inches in diameter which somehow attaches between the mic clip and stand to stop the majority of the sound going past the trumpet mic into whatever is in front. A little like a drum shield, but less obtrusive and for brass!

You could eaily make your own. I di for Tom Jones's horn section a few years ago. Just go to B & Q for some plastic glass and cut it to size with a jig saw realy easy to do !

Second that, we made a few for a large brass section band. You can cut centre hole to fit SM57 body & put some felt /rubber to give a bit of cushioning.
