Monitors

Hey,

I'm looking for a pair of decent monitors for a shared studio project.

I'm becoming quite inclined towards a second hand set of NS 10's.

Has anyone got any ideas for decent, hard wearing nearfields? (unfourtunly our budget won't stretch to Mackies...)

cheers

Assuming you mean the NS10, I'd take a listen to them before you decide. They're popular because they're a known quantity, and not nessesariliy because they're particularly great monitors IMHO.

The NS10's became industry standard as small speakers in studio's as they were useful for monitoring mixes on something a little closer to hi-fi speakers. I have heard that the tweeters in them are a little prone to blowing, but you can still buy replacements.

Have a look at some Tannoy Reveals, they are fairly decent nearfield monitors and can be bought new for about £150 passive or £300 active.

Greetings,

If your looking for small nearfeild monitors have a look at the Tannoy Reveals. I bought a pair of the active ones about a year ago and love them. If budget is a problem see if you can get hold of a pair of JBL Control 1+. They have a better response than the humble standard one with improved bass and top end responce.

The Reveals are a definate possibility,

So knowone really rates the NS10's, the reason I ask is that almost every studio uses them. After talking to a few industry people the oppionion seems to be that if you can make a mix sound good on the NS10, it will sound good on anything?

I remember it was the fact that they were Everywhere so no matter which studio you went to you could get the same sound. However the sound they produce is far from the best sound available. Most studios would have a set of monitors costing £x thousand pounds each then a pair of NS10's as nearfields and usually a small radio speaker to really check out that mix on a crappy speaker. SO for most things the NS10 would not have been used and in fact they have now been discontinued by Yamaha.

My advice to you is to go and LISTEN to loads of monitors with music you know really well. Most places like sound control don't mind this at all and are happy to demo stuff for you
