richard Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Does anyone have any ideas on how you can get the strand OLE to work on Win XP, I had hoped that you could do it using their new USB dongle thing, but it appears that you can't, so any other thoughts?? Richard
gareth Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Generally-accepted wisdom is that it's not possible. GeniusPro OLE needs a "proper" DOS session in which to run - something which WinXP can't provide (only a "pretend" DOS box).
Bryson Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Would setting up your PC to dual boot with winXp in one partition and just Dos (or an old flavour of windows) in the other work?
ace Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 A couple of thoughts come to mind! Could you make a just make a boot disk/CD which boots into DOS? Or alternatively could you use something like VMware to emulate a PC, and install DOS?
The Lurker Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 *delurk* The OLE won't run under Windows XP or any other recent version of Windows because of the TNT extender it uses which runs on top of DOS. So either boot into DOS as others have suggested, or get a copy of Virtual PC for Windows: Microsoft Virtual PC It costs about £80 IIRC and comes with a copy of PC DOS which you can use to run the OLE without having to leave Windows. If it freezes up when loading, you may also need to add a batch file called userinit.bat in the OLE directory with "Set OS=Windows_NT" or set it from the command line before running the editor. I'd imagine it's the same under VMWare but I haven't used it so can't comment. Hope this helps. --Jason
Alan Pickwick Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Does anyone have any ideas on how you can get the strand OLE to work on Win XP, I had hoped that you could do it using their new USB dongle thing, but it appears that you can't, so any other thoughts?? Richard I am DELIGHTED to report that the Strand 300/500 Series Off-Line Editor works in Windows XP using the SUN xVM VirtualBox emulator. http://www.virtualbox.org/ This offers much relief to those who have had to keep a DOS or Windows 98 machine for Off-Line editing. I had a few difficulties getting DOS 6.22 to format the virtual hard drive but using another bootable floppy with Format on it fixed that. On DOS installation, the floppy had the tendency to got off-line but that is fixed by just Unmounting and Mounting it from the menu. I installed the C3 and HC files. The Editor has loaded a show and responds to the function keys and the mouse. It is very likely that this will work on *86 machines under Microsoft or Linux. Please have a go and let me know how you get on. Alan C Pickwick.Urmston Musical Theatre.
