Spud Murphy Posted February 20, 2004 Posted February 20, 2004 I'm after some advice about recording whats coming out of my sound card into mp3. I need to record around 30mins of audio and preferably for free. I've tired the usual free downloads from cnet and the sound recorder that comes windows, but these all seem to be limited to 3 minute or less max trial lengths. Thanks for any help.

Hmmmm..... (?) I use a program called loop recorder, can't remeber how I cam accross it, but basically you select an input (most computers only have a line in and a mic in) and then you start recording... simple as! Stores the file where ever you want it to and will convert to mp3, wma, all the mega used ones. Hope this helps Steve
TomLyall Posted February 21, 2004 Posted February 21, 2004 well... if I understand you right you want to record as an mp3 exactly what your hearing on your computer speakers... the easiest way to do that I find is to open your computer volume controls (or sound card settings, depends upon the manufacturer) and select your recording source, most have options for the inputs and most good cards will also allow you to select 'stereo mix' or something else to that effect, then just use a really simple program such as Windows Sound Recorder to record, unfortunately this will be as a WAV file which youll then need to convert to mp3, there are programs out there I cant remember a good one of the top of my head, hope this helps Tom
Spud Murphy Posted February 22, 2004 Author Posted February 22, 2004 thanks for all your help so far. To clear up what I'm trying to do.Basically I want to record some music that is streamed on the internet and currently have no way of saving it, so yes I want to be able to record whats coming out of my sound card.as was said having it saved as a mp3 is not a huge problem as there are converters around that do such things. My main problem is trying to find a programme that lets me record for around 30 minutes, I tried Windows Sound Recorder but that seemed to cut out after 1 minute. Several other programmes that I downloaded were limited to 3 minutes because they were unregistered.Thanx for any help.
Brian Posted February 22, 2004 Posted February 22, 2004 What you need is 'Total Recorder' it's a piece of software which sits between whatever progam is 'receiving' the audio and the sound card drivers and allows you to capture any sound going to your sound card. It isn't free though.
Tom Baldwin Posted February 22, 2004 Posted February 22, 2004 I use Virtual Audio Cable for that sort of thing. It appears as audio devices in the Windows Wave Mapper, so you can send output to file rather than speakers, without ever leaving the digital domain. If it's a RealAudio stream, there used to be a piece of software called Streambox VCR which saved the RA stream to disk, rather than playing it. Real Networks went after the people behind it (because much online content is only licensed for streaming, not download, and Streambox made a nasty hole in the willingness of content providers to allow RA streams of their material), and it's now been withdrawn. However, this being the Internet, it's not unreasonable to suppose you might find an unofficial mirror... Of course, with all of this, copyright issues may arise: do you have permission to make this recording, and then to use it in the way you wish afterwards? Tom
