tartrazine Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 How much should I pay for a used Goldenscan 1?I have been offered 4 for £800 in full working order.
Stu Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 Is that £800 for all 4? I can't find much on Google at all, but from what I can find it's about 14yrs old (won an award in 1989) looks like it might have been a club/disco scan, and possible 4 or 5 channels of DMX. Mind you £200 for a scan isn't bad really, so providing they are in good nick and looks like you can get many more miles out of them, might be worth it. Try e-mailing / contacting Clay Paky for a spec on the fixtures from their archives? Stu
James Posted February 18, 2004 Posted February 18, 2004 Is my brain decieving me or were the goldenscan 1's DMX - I have a vauge feeling that they were not. Just something to consider... James
Wilf dLampy Posted February 18, 2004 Posted February 18, 2004 The original models weren't DMX, and had a 300W (ish) lamp (IIRC). Basically they were a big equivalent of what later became the Miniscan 300 (not the HPE version) but without the DMX function.
tartrazine Posted February 18, 2004 Author Posted February 18, 2004 Did Clay Paky have some sort of proprietary control protocol at that time then, they must have presumably as otherwise how would you ever control them? The seller says these have 575w lamps.

tartrazine Posted February 18, 2004 Author Posted February 18, 2004 A good point about non-DMX. A call to Pulsar, who distribute Clay Paky in the UK, tells me that, yes the original Goldenscans had PMX which is a proprietary protocol developed by Pulsar and Clay Paky at the time for the scanner. DMX is vaguely similar to PMX but uses RS485 line drivers rather than RS 232 as used by PMX. There are other differences! Pulsar still stock parts for and service original Goldenscans.
Tom Baldwin Posted February 18, 2004 Posted February 18, 2004 Steve Unwin's personal web page used to have info on PMX, but he seems to have taken that down now. However, courtesy of the Wayback Machine, you can still get that data here! Hope it's of interest, Tom
tartrazine Posted February 19, 2004 Author Posted February 19, 2004 Thank you for reminding me of the wayback machine, I had completely forgotten it. I did find this site, but it had changed, as you know.
strandgsx Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 Hey Peeps, I think I can help with any goldenscan 1 questions, I have 30 575's and 22 1200s, I still use them today. THe goldenscan ones utilised a hmi 575 or 1200 discharge lamp. The all only ever had four colours excluding white and four gobos excluding open. A motorised iris and shutter. They will only run on pulsar 0-10v voltage signal, or PMX. You can get pmx from the original claypaky controller designed for the goldenscan or most pulsar masterpiece desks. I will warn to anybody wishing to buy these, they are high maintenence heavy and can be awkword. you can email me questions at mail@phonophobia-online.co.uk £200-300 each is a reasonable price but bear in mind that for that money you can pickup used martin 218s etc which do much more and run DMX.
