death-of-fleas Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 Does any one know a good insurer for me to insure my kit that I'm taking on tour with me or is it covered by BECTU's public liability insurance? Please help
Rob Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 BECTU's PL policy will probably not cover your own kit. The BECTU policy will be through AON who also offer kit insurance. Their number is 08457 697 504. One trick with insuring equipment if you only want cover for short periods is to set up a policy with a low cover amount (£500 for instance) and then just get it boosted up as and when you need. I do this all the time when I hire kit - I have a years cover for £500 of kit in my care which costs about £180, and when I want to bump it up to say £75,000 for a few days it costs me an extra £50.
death-of-fleas Posted February 6, 2004 Author Posted February 6, 2004 It's things like my own baggage and computer that I want to cover.
Tomo Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 Check your household contents insurance - some policies will cover specific items while they are out of the house.(Mine covers the laptop anywhere I am.) Don't assume it though! Some policies don't, and ALL have limitations of some kind.
Guest lightnix Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 Robertson Taylor dropped the personal effects (i.e. tools, computers) part of their Production Personnal Package last year, it seems that they couldn't find anyone willing to underwrite it. You might be able to cover these things under your domestic insurance policy, in return for an increased premium. A simple travel / medical policy should cover baggage. Again, try Robertson Taylor in London or Torribles in Bristol.
gareth Posted February 6, 2004 Posted February 6, 2004 Public liability insurance and equipment insurance are two completely different things. Aon Risk Services, who look after PL insurance for BECTU members, also run a policy which is available at extra cost to members called "SceneOne", which covers tools and equipment. It's very reasonably priced (I have a policy with them myself). If you're a BECTU member, give them a call.
death-of-fleas Posted February 7, 2004 Author Posted February 7, 2004 That policy doesn't cover personal items like baggage, which is what I want to cover.
Big Dave Posted February 7, 2004 Posted February 7, 2004 Personal Items are normally covered under household insurance or standard travel insurance.
