LD tips for conserts

I have had lights for concerts in this venue for a great deal of conserts, with an ok result. But like everybody else, I wan't it to be better

Of equiptment I have FatFrog, 16 Par64 cans, 4 floorcans, 2 Pilot150 MovingHeads and 4 par64 short-nose cans in front.

Since this is a combined disco and consert venue, everything has to be moveable, therfor the par64's on 4 Botex bars.

Most of the problem is that the stage is a triangular shape with measure 6x4x8m sides. And the hight is only 2m. So I can't the the lights high enough.

So I wonder how to make a cool show when I can't get the cans in the back high enough. Somethimes there is allmost inpossible to put some lights behind the drummer due to no place.

If you only have 2m to play with then you'll have to live with it. I'd put 4 par cans on each side of the stage, about half way back and as high as possible, to give me the wash I'd want. The other cans I'd put FOH or if I can't do that right at the front of the stage, with the band about 1m behind them. It means you'll be heavily side-lit but that can work OK. Floor cans US pointing DS from behind the band also work.

Most of the tips here, This topic, will still apply to your situation.

If this is a regular gig why not take a day to experiment in the venue with no bands around?

Crazy idea, but why not keep the lights on the ground, and fix mirrors to the ceiling?

Kinky I know  , but saw a great production once that used this forgotten technique.

Not that crazy or forgotton. JCS used them in the last re-incarnation in the west end.

And a certain gadget company has won an award for their beam bender which is the same only attached to the light itself.

An idea for the drummer put a powerful strobe, like a martin atomic 3000 just behind the drummer’s seat facing out to the audience. Along with other bright colourful lights, the strobe put on certain intervals and at different speeds will get the crowds going. Another thing, can you hang anything from above? If you can, how about two bits of truss hanging down, with a Pilot150 MovingHead on each facing towards the audience. So the truss doesn’t stand out too much how about a Strand quartet or something similar with 202 or 181 in it on each facing down the truss to light it up. As for other lights I agree with Brian, use a lot of side light, with a bit of FOH to pick up the band members. I would also use a lot of bright, bold colours everywhere.

Basically that’s what I would do, I hope it helps.

Pinspots inside the truss pointing along it's length are good for this as well...

......or any DMX stobe, doesnt have to be the atomic. Be sure to put signs up saying that you are using strobing effects if you end up using them! Not familier with the pilots, maybe hiring out 2 mac 300's and mixing some colours could be effective.

Hmm, might end up a bit close to the deck.

The roof is made of stucco ceiling and cannot hold anything. And I can't have anything in FOH due to the risk of it knocked down. Normally I have 2 bars on the sides and 2 in the back. High as possible. But gonna try to put the pilot150's where the drummer is, and perhaps use a lot of strong back colors, so that people can see that it is light on the stage :=)

Personally I'd use the 4 floorcans along the front of the stage to give a nice different angle of attack on the lighting - esp good if any songs are particularly atmospheric.

The 4 cans out FOH could keylight each member of the band, and then with the 16 cans on bars of 4, have a four colour wash (perhaps open white, L105, L119 and L795) and vary the angles they are used - so 2 bars from the sides, 2 from the back?

Then put the Pilot 150s somewhere they can be seen, as if at poss, do audience hits - perhaps on Flightcases next to drummer?
