dmx cable

I have always used the same cables for DMX as mics but was told I should not do this by a guy in a shop near me who said that equipment may not work properley on longer runs and I should buy suitible more expensive cable,is this true also I saw a band at a large pub a couple of weeks ago who's lighting guy made up his own cables using cat5 computer cable,is this a cheap way round it.
