sounddude Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Hi ppl a school that I know has recently bought 2x PV215's(4 ohms), 2x PV115's(8 ohms) and a Behringer EP1500(8 ohm).they are saying this system is not loud enough and to me that doesnt sound right. any help people. sorry if I've missed anything just ask if you need more information alex
Dj Dunc Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Hmm I hope its not a case of dribing the PV215's through the EP1500 as well ie mixing 4 ohms with 8 also what wattages are these speakers and how are you wiring these up. as the Ep1500 if I remember rightly isnt that powerful. should maybe have been a 2500, but as yet I dont know.
Ben Langfeld Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Firstly, I'm guessing the PV115s are used as delays. If not, that's a very strange setup! Secondly, an EP1500 probably isn't a suitable amp. You certainly won't be getting a decent amount of power out of it; before even starting on the problems of powering completely different speakers from one amp channel. More details on how it's used are needed in order to make any further recommendations.
sounddude Posted April 30, 2007 Author Posted April 30, 2007 at the moment the school run a output from one chanel to the pv215(8) then a link to the 115's(4) in parallel the output is 700w and the capacity of the 215's is 1400 and the 115 is 800, sorry if that is no help but im fairly new to this sound stuff
Rob_Beech Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 As other have started to say. the EP1500 is a relatively small amplifier in comparison to some. IIRC peavey cabinets tend to have rather high power ratings so the combination of the 2 is clearly not a good one. I would assume that the 2 4ohm boxes be powered off one channel and the 2 8 ohm boxes off the other to allow for an adjustable volume control between the 2 and even a separate mix (depending on the equipment before the amp). this would be driving 1 channel at 2ohms which is a little hard on the poor old amp. Added to the fact it is a little underpowered for the job in hand, the people have said its not loud enough (the only way they can have found this out is by driving the system hard and it not being loud enough). This combination isn't ideal to say the least. I would expect a Larger amplifier is in order, and perhaps put the smaller one for the 115s? More information would confirm this. *Size of room + Capacity*Plan of room (speaker placement)*Program material used (metal bands, piano recital, jazz orchestra, speech,)*Expected level (90dB, 100dB, 155dB at the back of the room) Rob
paulears Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 My experience of Peavey cabs is that they aren't that efficient and take a fair bit of amp power to get moving, so I don't doubt that they are not loud. I'd also guess that they've just been paralleled up, running straight stereo.
Trunker Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I think Paulears may be right. They sound ok on a disco or a band or something similar. What is the school using them for? Musicals? Dance Shows? A bit more info is needed really. The EP1500 won't drive these speakers properly either. And the mismatch of ohm-age won't help either.

Rob_Beech Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Could be. I am concerned about the first point. they sound ok for disco's and bands. this really does label 2 of the main areas with the 3rd being theatre related. It seems to be said as if they're fine for disco and band but nothing else. IMO they're probably not ideal for bands with the current amplifier.
TonyMitchell Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I am concerned about the first point. they sound ok for disco's and bands. Me too. "OK" is very subjective. I've yet to hear a Peavey system that I'd say was "ok" for professional use. However for fairgrounds, DJ Dave DoubleDecks and small pub bands I suppose they have their place in the foodchain. At the end of the day, as has been discussed many times previously, they're not pro kit.
sounddude Posted May 1, 2007 Author Posted May 1, 2007 firstly the rig is used for mainly dance shows and talent shows so a big range.the room seats 300 and is about 300 metre square the speakers are placed eihter size of the stage at the top. and yes they are running in paralel straight stereo. thanks for help.
