FaithlessRock Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Hi, Can anyone advise where I can get a cheap DMX controlled relay rack? Ideally it would need 12 chanels, each outputting mains voltage. Many thanksMark
paulears Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 The Zero 88 switch 6 pack is something that will do what you want - relay controlled via DMX zero 88 switch 6 here
tokm Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Is this not in the wrong section?? DMX relays sound more of a lighting or electricity section type question as opposed to Effects/Pyro. Or are you trying to run pyro via DMX :) Tom
Bryson Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Good spot, Tokm. Is this just randomly in the wrong forum, or did you have an effect in mind to use with the relay packs? As tokm says, DMX is not a good idea for safety-critical applications.
Jivemaster Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 http://www.milinst.com/ has all you will ever need BUT the spec for DMX says not to be used in safety critical situations, therefore you are likely on your own for all design and risk assessment and product liability
J Pearce Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Effects could also include fans, non DMX foggers or hazers, or snow droppers.
Jivemaster Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 The caveat remains valid, if a remote start would cause danger then you are past the design limit of DMX. With "Am/theatre" and "Fireworks" in the OP's profile, the post is a justified response.
FaithlessRock Posted April 30, 2007 Author Posted April 30, 2007 Hi everyone, Thanks for your responses. Sorry for any confusion about posting in the wrong section. I'm working on a strange project and didn't realy know which topic to writ under. I am NOT intending to fire pyro via DMX. I am actually hoping to make a small dancing water fountain show to be a part of a fireworks show. I therefore need to control pumps, solenoid valves and underwater lighting. I am using DMX as my existing setup uses a DMX lighting and laser rig, video projection triggered by DMX and a soundtrack which is run from the DMX software. Does anyone have anymore suggestions where I could get a relay board from? Many thanks once again,Mark
Jivemaster Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 http://www.milinst.com/ and look for DMX devices. and specifically http://www.milinst.com/DMX/1_493inst.pdf New DMX Relay Board. 8 Digital relay outputs which may be controlled from a DMX system. Base address may be set between 1 and 504. Works with full speed DMX signal stream (44 updates /sec) Many motors will need contactors driven by the relays
JimWebber Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I've been toying with the dancing fountain idea for a couple of years now, and I too considered a DMX relay board. However, I discounted it because I did not believe that most relays were up to the rapid on/off action that would be required to drive the valves. The relay contacts banging in and out that fast would cause problems. When I actually get round to building it, I will be using a switching pack ie) solid state switching. HTH Jim
Jivemaster Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I think that there will be a big pump, - think swimming pool circulation. Control by a number of washing machine solenoid valves. Everything -motors and solenoids especially will be inductive so care will be called for.

HTH Jim how fast do you need to switch? Omron do upto 30A relays that will switch at 5 times per second.
borg Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 Try CPC,Here is one for 60quid http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/Car,+Leisure+&a...jsp?sku=HK00855 hopefully that link will work if it dosn't go to cpc.co.uk then search for HK00855
