catchthebuzz Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Is the DBX DriveRack PA 24-bit Loudspeaker Control unit useable with powered tops or am I wasting my money? I had heard that the unit was meant to be used between the power amp and the speaker. I have a set of QSC HPR 122i 500 watt powered tops. I am using it for a four piece rock band. Any thoughts?
TonyMitchell Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 The Driverack is a Loudspeaker Management System that is used BEFORE the amplification stage, NOT between the Amplifiers and the Speakers.
Rob_Beech Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 As Tony says. HOWEVER! Before you go and purchase one of these vile pieces of equipment, do a search on here for the unit. Or read on....... the Driverack PA has no relays on the outputs unlike most if not all other digital loudspeaker management systems, This means that on certain systems your High Frequency section can be destroyed if the unit is not used properly. If power is lost to the unit whilst the amplifiers/powered speakers remain switched on there is a good chance that a "pop" in the system can destroy your HF. This may be caused by you switching the power off accidentally, someone pulling the plug on purpose, or a unit failure. The next unit in the range the Driverack 260 IIRC does not suffer from this problem. However on a budget I would advise the Behringer DCX2496. you can't beat it for the money. Of look for a second hand BSS/XTA unit but be prepared to pay!
Girlyboy Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Hello The DBX Driverack PA (as well as all other 'louspeaker management' devices) is basically an advanced crossover unit, to be used between the mixing desk outputs and the amplifiers. You would use it to split the full range output of the mixing desk into frequency bands which would then be sent to the most ideal speaker, ie low end goes to the subs, mids to mid drivers and hi end to horns. The 'loudspeaker management' part is the tools incorporated into the unit ie limiters and EQ which you have control over and can set for your purposes. The limiter is to protect your amps from clipping, thereby reducing the risk of blowing up your speakers. From your post, it sounds like you only have a pair of full range drivers - therefore as a crossover the unit won't be much use to you, unless you intend to add a pair of subs in the future. The only tool you're likely to use will be the EQ, and there are cheaper ways of EQ'ing your rig than buying a Driverack PA. There is no problem connecting this in front of a pair of active speakers, just don't plug it between an amp and speakers please! That would be like setting fire to your money, and possibly the property you are in. Hope this helpsSimon
