marios Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 I bought 3 AKG 418 mics about 6 months ago and I tried using them but I kept on getting really loud pops when the drummers were hitting the toms. I didnt understand why. I plugged them in straight to the desk and lightly taped them right at the back of the capsule and it still poped. Ive tried padding them on the desk but the signal is still too hot. should I get some inline pads for them? If yes are there any other options apart from the ones on the Thoman site cause the only one ive seen is a Shure one and its more than £40 so id have to pay £120 to make these mics work. am I doing something wrong and is there anywhere else I could buy some pads from? CheersMarios
Simon Lewis Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Marios, I really like AKG - they make some good mics. It's a shame that the 418 isn't really one of them. You can make your own pads quite easily, but the mics themselves are so easily broken, or have their cable chopped off by careless packing away in a mics case. I chucked my broken 418s and bought Sennheiser clip ons instead. Simon
marios Posted April 23, 2007 Author Posted April 23, 2007 Thanks for the reply simon. Im just trying to make use of everything I have in my mic box. Id rather see if I can somehow make them work than buy new ones.
Shez Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Making pads yourself is the most cost effective way (XLRF, XLRM, three resistors and an offcut of cable). Studiospares sell them in 10, 20, 30 & 40dB versions; search for inline attenuator.
