landy Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 A chum asked me about buying a 'thingy' to run DMX equipment using his laptop. The one he is looking at I apparently in CPC for around £50 .Cheeper than a digital desk. I, however haven't ever used one, but proberly there is someone who has..... all he is after, is to know if there any horror stories or whethr there are good or bad models? and ofcorse general oppinion.
Bryson Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 I think you mean a DMX Dongle: Some discussion of that here or search the forum for "DMX Dongle".
SiCo Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Try and find out which one he has found for £50ish and he will have to write some software himself or invest in some that works with it at this price.
landy Posted January 26, 2004 Author Posted January 26, 2004 Thank you Bryson. I tried a search, but that elusive word Dongle was missing in my search.
Matt Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 the one in the cpc catalouygue is a build it yourself kit I think, or was that the maplins one? :** laughs out loud **: anyway, it operates on the old rs232 serial thing... looks quite cheap to me... I saw a box form this company called "showcad" at a mates school  it looked like one of those kits, but usb, in a crappy little box made out of that plastic you get in school technology departments. mind you, it still does 512 channel, using the 3 pin XLR/DMX leads
Jon T Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Is it hard to make your own and where would I be able to find instructions to build one? How much is the software? any links would be good. cheersjon
benweblight Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 no, thats the cpc one, maplins one is £70ish
Matt Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 ahhh ok, wanabe, have a look at the ryger site and download a demo of the "easy stand alone" software or something similar, thats pretty decent, but the interface box is the killer on the budget.
Jon T Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Could I have a link to the maplin page with it on because I cant seem to find it. cheersjon
Matt Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 www.maplinelectronics.com may not be there, it might forward you to new one, I not in a remotely fit state to be on the net at the moment, am I rambling
Jon T Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 I'm on the site but I dont know where to look???....what is it under??? cheersjon
nickb12345 Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Hi www.maplin.co.uk In the search box type the product code: RP99H That should lead you to it. If not search for "DMX Dongle" (without quotes) and its the DMX512 Controller & Protocol Convertor. Also it might be worth considering that this is a DIY kit and you have to make it up. Nick
wodp Posted January 28, 2004 Posted January 28, 2004 Well you have to put it in a case anyway. Mines still in anti-static wrapping cos I couldn't be bothered to mod a case to take it cleanly. Not even tried it as I am now unable to afford a scanner to try it with ;) No use on the mac under osx I believe (iBook is coming this week). Dave
SceneMaster Posted January 29, 2004 Posted January 29, 2004 Maplin's Control Card only controls 112 and rs232 will only control 255. The CPC looks better but the Maplin card is more expensive because it can add ore take out 4ch from inputs such as sliders. Great if you want to build you own desk!!!
SceneMaster Posted January 29, 2004 Posted January 29, 2004 Hang on. I've been looking a the CPC dongle cna someone put a link to the one that is £50. Thanks
