Haywood22171 Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Hey am just Leaving college and am going to having a gap year. I am wanting to attend uni on a technical theatre course but am wanting to know if anyone has any ideas of what I can do that will give me the experience in the industry Ive seen the NSDF and am too late to apply I am going to go a an amateur theatre and see if I could get some experience there but if anyone has any other ideas please post them thanks
SceneMaster Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 I see you point about gathering experience, however if you taking a gap year surely you should see the world and really enjoy it (even if you really enjoy tech theatre) rather than just working to gain experience as I am sure you will probably gain lots more experience and knowledge completing you technical uni course than you would just working for amateur theatres for a year.
Jivemaster Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Depends a lot on your intended specialism! You really MUST make use of this year, or you will be a year older with nothing to show for it. You also need some savings to fund your course, and some references for the Uni to take up.
Ken Coker Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Sail a boat across the Atlantic.Go high-altitude mountaineering.Read this book. KC
Jivemaster Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Remember importantly that your prospective course lecturers, examiners and moderators, also your likely employers are represented on this forum.

You also need some savings to fund your course, and some references for the Uni to take up. Why not try obtaining relevant books and actually trying to read them. This is a really good starting point for learning the basics in this industry. Budgets and grants.... Not really interested. I want people with exprience, but it's that viscious circle of qualifications vs experience............so mabe try to find a company that wll help you in your goals. With respect, what is a gap year. A year where you do fu**k all ? this is not even entertained, Self motivation is the key, Learn your desired subject, whatever it is, and hopefully by the end of it, you will have the knowledge to appreciate this form of art.
Jivemaster Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 A gap year is NOT a year of private study for your course/career. Go DO something INTERESTING, achieve something, win something. Keep touching base with academia but do something that you will never get an opportunity to do later. A gap year is for doing something that having a mortgage/loans etc would prevent. Travel round the world visiting theatres. Get some work experience at Sydney Opera House and a venue in NZ. Remember that academia expects you to bring something back into your life for this year out. Keep the application process going. Keep your English up to standard and learn a foreigh language.
