itinerant baker Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 It's time I got some new steel toe cap boots, anyone seen any bargains or got anything to recommend at the moment? I'm not sure if I'm after something traditionally bootish or maybe something a bit more modern looking - as summers approaching I fancy something that's not too heavy or clog like. They also need to be black and presentable on smart jobs.
Simon Lewis Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 It's time I got some new steel toe cap boots, anyone seen any bargains or got anything to recommend at the moment? Bought some from Screwfix... quite light and comfy... Although there's a refelective stripe that may not be appropriate!
gareth Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 I've said it before and I'll say it again - Dr Marten's safety 'chukka' boot - you'll not find better. Visit Arco's website and look up product code 644300 (can't find a way to link directly to the page, sorry).
PoppaDom Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Depending on the level of protection required I wear Magnum boots which have a reinforced toe cap but are not steel. I wear them on get-ins that are not heavy and outside on site in the summer. They are quite smart as well. Poppadom
drscab Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 My only pair of footwear at the moment is a pair of Magnum Classic boots. So bloody comfy! Para boots are also really comfy too, but like the Magnums don't have steel toe caps.
Rob_Beech Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 I've said it before and I'll say it again yes, no doubt in each of the 73 other threads on the subject. [/moaning old git]
Simon Lyall Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Being an Army Cadet I've sampled a selection of boots over the last few years all of them mainly designed for outdoor use, but all with steel toes! The popular military boots like Pro-boots and Lowas are great for hoofing around the countryside but are heavy and in a stage environment are pretty pointlessly heavy and too warm! I found the magnum classics not good for me (the cloth part gets muddy and is a pain to get off and isn't waterproof) plus they don't have steel toe caps. I use the Magnum Pro-Tector boots which are similar to the classics but fully leather (thus a little warmer) and have 200 joule steel toes. I'm no expert in this industry (I'm not really in it yet!) but for my use in the theatre and such they have done me very well, and doubling up as my cadet boots they are a good purchase. I got mine from here: http://www.polimil.co.uk/acatalog/Magnum_P...oot__51_05.html they are nice and cheap too! Only my humble opinion, I haven't sampled the more 'civvi' boots because part of my requirements is that they are completely black without and logos on so my opinion is only based on security/military style boots. Simon Edit: Oh and the standard issue Assault boots, mine have never shown a sign of starting to fall apart after quite a lot of heavy use... however they aren't very comfortable at all!
gareth Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 I've said it before and I'll say it againyes, no doubt in each of the 73 other threads on the subject.Quite so, Rob. The search function is a wonderful thing. A bit like proper spelling and punctuation - an absolute joy, but no bugger seems to use them these days. :D
itinerant baker Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 anyone seen any bargains or got anything to recommend at the moment? :D This place really does need to get over itself sometimes. :( Cheers for the quick responses and keep em coming, definitely some food for thought there, quite tempted by some of those Magnum Pro-Tectors.
Rob_Beech Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 I think the obvious response would be its ideal to add it to an existing thread. that way you can have a look at what other people have said on the matter in the past, your question may already be answered. In this case it isn't as you said at the moment. But it could still be added to another topic. it was only a little humour anyway. Rob
gareth Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Caterpillar steel toecap boots.Had a pair once. Flamin' uncomfortable. YMMV, of course.
dbuckley Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 I wear the non-steel-toe-capped versions with the suit :D My mileage does indeed vary, or perhaps, given that I wear these things much of the time, perhaps my footsies have melded themselves to the Cat idea of what a foot should be. Many of my Kiwi colleagues have a type of steel toe boots known as Jandles, so they fair slightly less well than I do when a flightcase wheel comes their tootsies way: http://www.uncrate.com/men/images/ae-create-flip-flops.jpg
andy_s Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 I thought Kiwis were all men of steel anyway, so needed no additional metalwork..... ( no offence meant)
itinerant baker Posted April 19, 2007 Author Posted April 19, 2007 Sorry Rob, I did see the humour in that but didn't put it across very well! :D :( Simon - what's the sizing like on those Magnums? Not sure how I feel about buying boots I haven't tried on, but that may be the only way of getting those particular ones. I've never had much luck with Dr Martins, I've owned a few pairs in my youth and they've never lasted very well - and it's things like the sole going so I don't think it's down to my maintenance. Similarly I've heard a few people complaining that Caterpillar stuff isn't made like it used to be now that they're more popular as a fashion brand, I bought some cat socks that looked nice and chunky and worksocklike and they just look nice and chunky and worksocklike, nothing more. Oh, and 4 results that don't really answer my question. ;)
