MIGHTYBIGJIM Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Has anyone seen this?! Somebody has sent me this link which is worth a look. http://creative.highend.com/showgun/ Apparently it's hush hush at the moment but seems to be a very cool new moving head / LED product with a 2K light source. It's well worth checking out. Has anyone seen one of these in the flesh? What do we think?
Simon Lewis Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Apparently it's hush hush at the momentLooks rather like the "Official Document Left Accidentally By The Office Photocopier" - only worse.... but seems to be a very cool new moving head / LED product with a 2K light source. Working on the principle that the LEDs appear to be there just to make it look pretty, It looks like a high power, tarty disco light. Or an elaborate hoax.
Brian Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Apparently it's hush hush at the momentSo hush-hush it's on Highend's news page on their website.
Bryson Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Hush hush, aside from being on a publicly accessible website? This is obviously some definition of hush hush I'm unaware of....
tokm Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Or an elaborate hoax. The fact they have a working unit in the video makes me think this is more than a hoax... Any chance someone can find the date this web page was created or something? Reason I ask, would be if it say appeared on April 1st well, then we have our answer. I see what you mean about the LED's, but they did appear to be rather bright, perhaps it was just the video though.. Looks like it was doing profile and wash effects all from the same unit! Again, could have just been the way the video was shot. But I've thought for some time that a unit that could do both would find a nice place in the market. Any high end reps/employee's on here care to comment? Tom
niall Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 A high end employee posted the video on a crew forum I host a couple weeks back, so I don't think it would be a hoax! He did make some comments, unfortunately, the site is down atm, so I can't forward his comments! The employee in question is also a member here, so will no doubt post at some point.
Bryson Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Looks like a small "searchlight" type effect, with extra LED fun. I can see it being a Rock'n'Roll effect. Looks rather bright, if that's an X-spot it's up against in the end of the video.
Jonny DMX Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Can't think of an application where those LEDs and a 2k search light effect would ever be needed from the same fixture?!?! It looks like this light has been created to compete with the VL3500 Wash, which is also a 2k fixture. The VL has a better zoom and lens effect though from what I could see. Those LEDs just look like a gimmick that would serve no purpose other than to push the price up! I mean what are they doing that the fixture could not do on its own?! its certainly not a colour wash! The only thing that stands this apart from the VL3500W would be the gobo feature, but it makes you wonder what compromises have been made to allow a gobo wheel to fit in as well? I think there is a growing trend in fixtures designed for 'Olympic Ceremony' applications. I expect to see more of these in the near future. I suspect Martin will have one within the year! Spot fixtures that can achieve Wash effects already exist and works very well. It just requires a small mod to an existing Spot fixture.
martinw Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Lots of chat about this fixture over the roadVL3500 Wash, which is also a 2k fixture The VL3500 is 1200W to 1500W, not 2K Martin
niclights Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 What a strange video. And such a bizarre combination. I'm also really struggling to understand the point behind the LED's. However, the beam size and strength along with (fast) colour changing looks very nice. If there is a reasonable number of gobos I can see this being a useful fixture, albeit ignoring the LED's!

Maybe they're like those headlights on the bottom of the new RoadHog- completely pointless! ...Or maybe it's so the crew don't walk into floor-mounted ones in a blackout! :D
Bryson Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Looks like High End just bought a job lot of LEDs and are bolting them onto every product... :D
Don Allen Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 It would appear that the name says it all! The fixture is an evolution of moving heads becoming part of the set, not just hidden in the rigging. Even with the shutters closed, the head will look "showy" moving for the cameras on a set, especially the large USA tours.
Mark Leahy Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 SHOWGUN has a unique optical system that allows the soft edge to be a genuine soft edge that is variable by zoom. SHOWGUN is a true Soft Edge and Hard Edge light. Variable beam angles for SHOWGUN (both hard and soft edge) are 10 to 18 degrees. The LED tracking system provides a new look for any rig; it will grab the audience's attention and I can assure you that the LED's are very powerful! They will either track the main output beam or can be complementary to it in terms of colour. The LED tracking system can strobe and can be used with or without the main output beam. Mark - HES
