Smoking Ban & Haze

I would hope that common sense prevails and we'll see a LOT more rate-of-rise detectors installed in spaces that would regularly use smoke/haze effects.
The problem with traditional rate-of-rise detectors is that they are considerably less sensitive than smoke detectors. I've posted in the past about new 3 or 4 triggering method individually addressable heads. Gent make them I think, they can be changed from smoke to heat from the panel. They also detect CO, so should be much less prone to haze triggering.

They can also be your voice annunciator; "Run Away! Run Away!"

Back to the OP, it's not even smoke anyway. Smoke would involve something burning, which unless the kit has gone very dodgy is not something that it does :stagecrew: . Are they going to suggest that mother-nature is banned from being foggy too?

I think this requires common sense from management, as people have said, the problem is more the [slightly] drunk punters who just want to make a fuss as it looks something like their cigarette smoke did. However if management did their research they would find out that they are chemically different and could then put their 'foot down' as it were, and not have to stop the use of haze.

Perhaps we could all help by using the words Haze, Fog, Mist, Texture... when in discussion with laymen, rather than the rapidly becoming emotive Smoke

if the smokers are peeved about having to go outside, why doesnt the pub/club management do the cheeky option like most of the irish pubs have , and make a nice 3 + roof walled "conservatory" so that one side is always open and in the winter add patio heaters etc. from the opinions of punters in ireland, they often prefer it outside

Because many clubs and pubs simply don't have the money or space. Many licencing officers will not grant a variation on the licence to use outdoor areas due to worries of noise and security and planning permission is sometimes not available.

It's also my understanding of the bill that that would still be seen as an enclosed space and therefore would still have to be a smoke free area although I could be wrong.

3 walls and a roof is "enclosed" within the meaning of the act. Much to the chagrin of the smokers who use a balcony outside their staff-room at work!

I live and work in Edinburgh and haven't experienced any problems with smoke or haze, nor have I heard of any of my friends in the industry having any problems caused by the ban, which we've had in place for about a year now.

It makes sense to avoid using the term "smoke" machine, though.

The bar industry hasn't for the most part been hit as horribly as people feared either - ridiculously cheap supermarket prices are still the biggest threat to the industry. A lot of the worry about the smoking ban is unfounded, and to be honest it's made for a much more pleasant environment when you're out. It made it a lot easier for me to quite smoking, too!

And might apply to what some would consider "outside". A friend of mine is the security supervisor for Victoria Station and was telling me there's a canopy over the forecourt approximately 3 stories up from ground level and has walls on three sides so it's counted as enclosed. He's dreading the ban since he's going to have to move people on from there because they'll consider it outside and start lighting up.

Reading this topic reminds me of a night a little while ago when I DJ'd in a club that was non smoking.

There wer fog machines mounted in the fake walling either side of the DJ booth. I was busy working when I started to smell ciggerette smoke. I Looked over the booth and saw 3 lads crammed into a corner next to the fogger trying to sneak a fag!

Just wondered if anyone was having any problems or resistance to using hazers/smoke machines in venues now that the government have banned smoking?
