Hello Andy

You might find this thread useful in the Training & Qualifications forum

You can click on the books to take you straight to the Amazon page, should you want to buy any of them.

As for magazines, I don't think you can buy any in the shops (except for the weekly rag called The Stage - not so much a technicial magazine tho), but there is Entertainment Weekly (ETnow) and Lighting&Sound International (LSI Online).

Hope this helps.

The other source of magazines is the magazines produced by the Trade Associations: The ABTT do Sightline, the ALD do Focus, and I believe the PSA do one too (Total Production? Or is that someone else?) You'd have to be a member to get them, though, as I understand. In my experience, Sightline is the best of the above, but that may be my personal preference.

Although they'll try to tell you otherwise, L&SI and ETnow are (very) thinly veiled advertising, written up into a magazine. Although John Watt is well worth a read in L&SI.

If you live in London, some of the magazines mentioned above are available at French's Theatre Bookshop. Otherwise, as stated, you have to get them by subscription. If you have contact with a theatre or business, you would almost certainly be able to get a free subscription, because, as Bryson says, they contain a lot of advertising which they need to get across to us......

Also, try looking at the PLASA (professional lighting and sound association) website - they have an online bookshop, so you could find titles which you could then look up on amazon or ebay to see if you can find them cheaper. (they do cost quite a lot, like any specialist books!)

Agreed! Always the first place I turn to every month, and sometimes the only bit I bother to Read.

I believe you can get L&SI free if you are a theatre student, but you might be able to blag it if you say your doing drama GCSE or something.
