Learning! (Sound)

Hi, I'm new to sound, and I'm looking to learn more on the topic! I've been more involved in lighting, and I though it was time to expand my knowledge on to a new subject!

Sorry for the wacky questions! There probably stating the obvious!

- How do you connect an input source (eg: guitar or mic), to the mixer, then to the amp and finally to the speakers? (mainly focusing on the cables to use)

- How would you connect the mixer as it has an XLR as output, to an amp with a speakon as input?

Thanks!

You've got this a bit mixed up. The output from the mixer goes to the input of the amp - The speakon is the loudspeaker connector, which is the output. The amp may have XLR and jack inputs, or just jacks - depends a bit what it is - but you may find the mixer also has XLR and jacks. You can make up an XLR to XXX adaptor, with the XXX simply being the type used on your input.

The rest of your question suggests that you have not looked properly at the equipment you have. Mic into mixer, probably via XLR on each end, mixer to amp via XLR or jack if you have both options, then speakon to whatever socket your speakers have. Remember, you know what kit you have, we don't.

Guitar wise - you can plug a uitar direct into the line input of the mixer, but you'll need the gain quite a way up that can provide more hiss than you want or a DI box to convert the guitar level into a signal suitable to go into a mic input, or you can put a mic on the guitar amp.

If you do go direct to the mixer, then keep the cable short - high impedance guitars sound pretty dull with a long cable.

Moderation: I changed youir titles - it's bnot good to have topics in two separate areas with the same title - people may see one, and assume it's the other and not bother to post - I've added a word to each
