Faulty Digitech Studio 5000

Hi all, just got given a one of these processors today to fix. Ive looked at it, but not seen what it does sonically, but when you turn it on, the signal meter goes to max + the overload light goes on. It seems to me as if it is a power short somewhere, but when you turn the unit on, it takes about 2 seconds before the overload + signal lights go on. The unit itself powers up, and all features work, although I havent checked wether the hum is audible or just a visual thing. Any ideas people?

EDIT: Just taken up the power switch PCB (as its a seperate board) and theres a large burnt looking patch on it (cable sheath looks as if it might have become semi-liquid at one point and a hole in the pcb but cant see what was there) which smells like make up /mascara type stuff. Its also been to digitech once for repair. It came back and then broke again reportedly. I think that it was a US version, converted to UK by someone in the past, but it has worked fully before. The machine itself is an Issue 7 with a S.N. (serial number perhaps) of 15-87

EDIT 2: Had a look at the topside of the main pcb. ive seen a couple of things that might be the cause but are most likely not to be at fault. You will probably need a wiring diagram to understand me, (which I am in the progress of downloading from http://www.digitech.com/Downloads/discontinued.php under studio products > dhp55 (is what it says on the pcb,) and also > studio 5000 which is what it says on the case) but resistor R145 looks slightly suspect, a resistor next to Q15 also looks suspect

TBH, unless you're very good, without a schematic you don't stand much chance of fixing this unless it's a simple fault. By the sounds of it, with burnt patches of PCB, it's going to be more trouble to fix than the unit is worth. Stick it in the bin and use the time you save not having to fix it to earn some money to buy a new unit.

mmm. the burnt patch is on the seperate tiny pcb which just has the power switch on it. which is about 1 inch x 1.5 inch in size, which ive already had out, so wont be too hard to fix if I can find a schematic, so if anyone knows where to lay their hands on one, that would be great. Im going to email digitech to see if they are allowed to send me one, as they have probably got the previous fault still on record. hmm. id rather hoped I could get it working again. im going to see if this overload actually affects the sound or if its just a visual thing.

EDIT: just hooked it into my rig. there is a crackling audible when you put audio into the unit, and the original sound is barely audible. If you press bypass then the crackling goes away, and the sound comes through fine, with no distortions of any kind.

Just taken a look at it again, and fiddled with a few connections, and resoldered a couple of things, and it seems to be working fine now, I dunno how long it will hold out though.

Did the software ever reach any further than V1.0 or not? does anyone know anything else about these units.

many thanks
