Just bought a pair of the Snickers 'Pirate' shorts here (on special offer at the moment, including free and very fast delivery)

http://www.snickersclothing.co.uk/

first impressions are very good, I especially like the external pockets at the front, it means that your bits don't get crushed when you squat down.

Just off to buy the matching eye-patch and parrot .... arrgghhh!

SHORTS ALL THE WAY!!! Definatley wear them when I'm rigging, I find that trousers/jeans restrict you to movement , so I prefer shorts. If you are going on stage though, I agree, full blacks should be worn.

The results of this topic seem to show I'm very firmly in the minority, so I have been caqrrying out my own research, trying to be as unbiased as I can - and I've been looking at blokes in shorts (and jeans). For very obvious reasons this has to be a covert activity, but the results are pretty conclusive.

I've seen one bloke who actually looked good in 3/4 length shorts. Everybody else looked a little er, ........ odd. I enlisted a female in my research, and got her opinion too.

Problems seen.

Scars

varicose veins

excessive or no hair (oddly the female found no hair nicer?)

over thick calves

skinny calves

ankle socks, rather than trainer ones

ultra baggy legs

She also pointed out that many men who wear shorts also have big hangover stomachs - I looked and this was true!

She also queried why these people also seemed to have scout knives and torches dangling down - which she found amusing.

She found one bloke that looked "cute", he looked pretty normal to me. I was also told that my stomach would balance shorts well, which I don't think was a compliment.

So - all you people who think shorts are the thing to wear - it could be useful asking what people you trust, think you look like.

Paul

Before you are crowned as East Anglias answer to Trinny and Suzanna I think you have to undertake the ultimate R & D and try them for your self.

Go for a pair that come a couple of inches below the knee and if you normally wear jeans then you don't need them to have cargo pockets. Wear them during a hot production week and you will never go back.

<addes jealousy into conversation>

I've moved to Valencia, spain and once again working in the same industry...

shorts here are a MUST for health reasons, in trousers you'd end up with heatstroke really fast!!

however there are the obvious downfalls, legs are covered in scratches and I now have more skin to cover with cream!

However the company did supply professional workers shorts/trousers so they are really tough and full of tool pockets.. so I'm a big fan of them.

I've just found that my local branch of Millets are selling off Craghoppers Kiwi Duo trousers mucho cheap, down from £45 to £25.

They've got zip-off legs, with a choice of zipping them off above the knee for a regular shorts look, or below the knee if you're feeling piratical*.

These are actually my fourth pair (although the first one with that many zip off bits), and I'm a fan. Plenty of pockets, comfortable, etc.

* I'm really happy that 'piratical' is a real word

Shorts always in summer, especially when the venue heating is still on!!

As for having to go onstage, who cares if they see me.

If most shows are touring lighting designs with hardly any light onstage during scenes anymore, then they hardly neeed worry about anyone being seen in the changes!

Yeah!! Id go for shorts or 3/4 length for outside / rock n roll / arena gigs and prob black jeans for theatre. Although my legs are tanned!! - whoo-hoo, but I dont think bare knees should be seen in the wings!!

Well, our theatre have decreed that shorts are not acceptable for duties front of house - so our short wearing LX op is not the happiest man in the world - in the end, the venue paid for full length trousers - problem solved. Follow spots, accessed via flys and roofspace can wear shorts.

But Paul your LX op is ALWAYS grumpy. That's why he's called Grum.

And as for the trousers, I'm always happy to wear free stuff 'cos it means my clothes last longer.

Funny you should mention them. A carpenter I work with bought one a few weeks back and swears by them. They do actually seem really practical, although maybe not for riggers...
