IamOnStage Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Hi Guys I am about to graduate with a Bsc Hons in Audio Music Technology, I am currently working at my local theater just rigging lights and stage props. I am really new to this business but I reckon I am geared towards the event management side. I am planning to go to Australia at the end of the year, which gives me a few months to earn the money to get there and live for a bit. But what do you suggest I do to get my self on the ropes to good experience or qualifications while I am in Australia? Where is the best place to start my online or telephone search in Aus? Cheers Tom
Bryson Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Do you have your visa yet? I understand the Aussie Permanent resident visa is a tricky one to get.
dbuckley Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Yeah, so a lot of people come to New Zealand, get permanent residency, citizenship, and then bugger off to Oz. Long may they get sunburned and eaten by the numerous nasties that live there.

Cheers Tom Australia is a big place - which state are you planning on settling in? From memory, Victoria (our smallest mainland state) is about the size of Great Britain. It also has one of the lowest population densities (average 1 person per 2km... however the big desert in the centre of the country is the main reason for that). So you will probably want to settle in one of the major regional centres. I would not bother moving to Canberra (Australia's capitol) - it's not really that big a place. You would probably be best focusing on Melbourne (Victoria), Sydney (New South Wales), Adelaide (South Australia) or Perth (Western Australia). Sadly, each state tends to have different OH&S legislation, which is often quite similar, but just different enough to make transferring certificates of competency between states a pain in the rear. In Victoria, you will probably want a CoC in EWPs, Rigging (Basic) and maybe "Test and Tag" (aka PAT).
Jivemaster Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 The things that make entry to Australia easy include Private Income and indispensable trade or profession. Or marry and Australian girl and work for dual nationality/residence/working.
IamOnStage Posted April 5, 2007 Author Posted April 5, 2007 Cool, thanks for your replies. Do you have your visa yet? I understand the Aussie Permanent resident visa is a tricky one to get.Sry, forgot to mention that I am only planning on going for a year on a holiday working visa. (companies that regularly take on people or good courses etc.)??? Cheers Tom
mac.calder Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 My post was here!Thats one thing I hope to experience is how small England actually is!I am likely to go to a large city to meet a good amount of people and work. That probably narrows your selection down to 2 - Sydney or Melbourne. I was just seeing if anyone knew the best place to start my search for work/experience, as the web is too full at the moment! If you manage to get some decent event experiance, you may want to try your luck at staging connections - although they are considered to be the "Revolving Door" of the event industry here (they are probably the largest corporate event company in AU, with inhouse techs at some big hotels, however they have a bad reputation of not understanding the value of Human Capitol. They do however employ a lot of people.)

I have a meeting with an event manager in bristol coming up soon who will hopefully push me in the deep end (I like that). Thanks for your reply, there are couple of jobs going so I will send off my CV closer to the time (I'm going in November) If you come across any smaller companies let me know. Cheers Tom
mac.calder Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 If you come across any smaller companies let me know. It's my current industry, so I do have the names of a few. I am at Premiere Technology - MAY be worth a look in - tend to keep most people employed as casuals, however 'preferred' casuals can easily get 40+ hours a week during the busy periods. Another is Solution Red - I know next to nothing about them.
