PA System Help (Zeck Amp's and Cab's)

Hi there all, may I fist say that I have no real understanding of PA application, I am a dj that uses mostly HK Active systems so I just plug and play. :)

Whilst working in Germany a few years ago I picked up some amplifiers and speaker cab's made by Zeck Audio (I hope someone has heard of them other than me) :D the english web site is here if you want a look: http://www.dunaweb.hu/hsb/www.zeckaudio.co...sh/indeengl.htm

I have got 1 x PT3 power amp and 1 x PT7 power amp, if you look here for the specs: http://www.dunaweb.hu/hsb/www.zeckaudio.co..._techn.data.htm

The speakers are F series, 2 x F10.1 and 2 x F12.1 specs here: http://www.dunaweb.hu/hsb/www.zeckaudio.co...chnicaldata.htm

When I got the cab's there were no drivers fitted, the club I was working in had closed and some tea leaf got their hands on the drivers before me, I have since found out they should be JBL drivers, I took them to my local DJ centre and he put 10" Kappa Pro's (500w) and 12" Delta's (400w) I was running the 12" cab's from the PT3 amp and the 10" cab's from the PT7 amp.

The problem has come now as I wanted to add some sub's to this system. The local DJ place would have been happy to sell them to me but I decided to shop around and a nice guy at e-av.co.uk explained that the amps would not be up to running the sub's I wanted. I have since purchased a Mackie SWA1801Z for active bass and will be buying a set of SRM450's to complement them but I still have the problem with this system.

What is the best advise you can give me with regards to the Zeck system? should I change the drivers in the cab's to lower wattage? I have killed 2 12" drivers already and did not know why!!!! Any help would be appreciated and if anyone wants to buy some Zeck stuff let me know I will add the funds to the SRM 450 pot.

Cheers everyone.

Which is a directly relevant thread, and Chris Hinds* is very wise and helpfull.

Trying to advise on cabs with the "wrong" drivers in is a challenge most will not take. DIY speakers rarely sound as good as current developments by major companies.

Using typical ball park guesses, a DJ setup would be a 10 or 12 inch with a horn, for tops. and a 15 or possibly an 18 inch speaker in a bass enclosure. Your current amps would be adequate, small one for the tops, big one for the bins. It may be better if you get a 4 ohm bin with the 8 ohm tops. The critical parts being the controllers/processors. For a best sound option I suggest a new pair of tops and bins, with an active crosover/processor. For a low cost option look for a pair of 15in bass bins and use the existing 10+horns (if they still work) Tops fed from the smaller amp bins from the larger. An active crossover is needed before the amps Possibly crossing over at 120 - 150 Hz.

The second user market for mixed up speakers is poor,

* There are in fact TWO Chris Hinds! Both in the field of Pro Audio Both very wise. Both are on here (BR) Only one do I know through MDJF. The Chris Hinds of MDJF is most approachable on mobile dj type questions, but please read up a lot of his posts first, as he gets upset at each newcomer asking questions he has already answered publically.

Zeck are a fantastic manufacturer in my opinion. My friend has 2 12" x 1" cabs. The 12s are made by PHL specifically for Zeck and they sound fantastic. Ive not heard any of their amps but they seem well spec'd, the beauty of Zeck is you can pick it up relatively cheap in the UK as its un heard of. I have seen quite a few Zeck cabs loaded with celestion aswell. Might be worth investing in some better quality cones. Should you decide you are not gonna keep it and want to sell up, give me a shout :-)

Moderation: The advice to have a run accross to the DJ forums is a good one - we're just not good with brands we're unfamiliar with.

I've closed the topic as the OP has enough info to know where to get good advice.
