Bypassing DMX channels through a Strand GSX

We are trying to run a Moving head light desk through our Strand GSX, as we don't have to use as much cables. How do we do this? Do we need to change / disable something on the GSX to stop it hoggin the channels.

We have done this before but have forgotten how.

Thanks

Sounds like you need a DMX merger, It has 2 inputs and 1 output that is both the inputs merged together. then you need to plug the mover desk and the gsx in to the inputs and the output to the dimmers and movers, and say you have 100 dimmers you then address the first mover at 101 so it doesn't clash with the gsx output.

hope that makes sense!

I think this description is correct - it's been a while since I did it.

First of all make sure the desk has Communique software installed. Then select DMX IN - DIMMER mode to a sub. Fade up the sub. Go to the patch screen. Above output 125 you will see some other numbers like 126:1D 127:2D etc this means that incoming DMX dimmer 1 is patched to GSX output 126. You can change this (I think the syntax is <output><@><+xxx> where xxx is the number of the incoming DMX channel. Be careful you do not overpatch something else you are using. I think you only get access to 250 slots on the DMX chain.

I used to combine the outputs of 2 GSX's like this and use one for moving lights and one for Generics. Connecting the two together with a midi lead (with a switch in it) and enabling the midi backup/tracking function meant that with dummy cues on the moving light desk they would track each other through the show. The switch was there to break the link for plotting.

If the desk hasn't got Communique then you can enable the function in the GSX OLE and load the show file into the desk. DMX IN will then work on the desk for a while. I wouldn't rely on this method for a show.

Hope this helps.
